Not a shock cos they have been slipping down the table alarmingly of late but I have always liked Warne. Comes across as a really nice sound bloke who says it as it is. Maybe not the best manager when it comes to playing amazing football but often does a great job, especially in L1.
Did well with Rotherham had them punching above there weight for years. Hard to say with derby did what was expected got them promoted.
I find it disheartening to look at the bottom 3 in the championship. Derby - Recently promoted and with an average gate of almost 30k Luton - Recently in the Premier league Plymouth - Recently promoted from this league as champions with 101 points If Derby can’t put a side together capable of being at least upper mid table, there isn’t much hope for the rest of us, and league 1 could have to suffer them again next season. Am I right in thinking Luton will still have parachute money next season as well?
It seems very strange to sack him on Friday less than a day before a visit to Norwich when they lost last Saturday. They might as well have kept him while Sunday rather than go into Saturday on a wing and a prayer.
https://www.dcfc.co.uk/news/2025/02/derby-county-paul-warne-february-2024 How very very odd to sack him on the day they will be travelling down for an away day tomorrow, when they have had all week.
They’d definitely massively over achieved with their promotion - didn’t they have like 5 players on the books and just out of admin when Warne came in? Promotion probably come too quick for them?
Yes Luton will still be receiving parachute payments for another 2 seasons aswell, Oxford probably favourites to finish bottom doing well under Rowett and pompey considering their start also currently out of the bottom 3, difficult no question but can be achieved, Plymouth's downfall was Rooney, Warne great for L1 but never survived Championship football.
Oxford have done a cracking job tbf. Hope they stay up. I’ve always watched out for their results since the JPT Final - good set of fans they were on the day.
Their fans were irate when they sacked their manager earlier in the season. Turned out to be a good move.
Rowett is a pretty safe pair if hands, I don't count Birmingham's relegation as being on him going back for the last 8 games winning 3 drawing 2 and losing 3, damage done prior, just shows getting the right man in can make a big difference
Warne never could seem to find a way to get a team going that could stand up to championship football - its like he’s mastered league one but just got some mental block when it comes to the championship especially one with the resources available at derby in comparison to Rovrum.
He's been in the Championship 90% of the time with Rotherham and 6 months with Derby. Its not a mental block, he's just not had very good teams for that division or the resources/time needed either. He's a brilliant manager imho.
Too good for L1 not good enough for championship, he left to join Derby in Sep 22 which coincided with them finishing 19th under Matt Taylor with a Paul Warne team
He left them and they were top 10. And regardless, I'm not sure any Rotherham team should expect to stop up.
