Forwards come in all shapes and sizes one cap doesn't fit all.Do we call Salah for example a striker ,winger or forward?.I think my point is it appears some supporters wanted a certain type of forward it doesn't mean the coach did.I think the last goal scoring target man we had was Aylott.I'm sure theres been others but he's the one who stood out.
Mladen stated "Darrell wanted someone who could run in behind with good physicality a bit of a target man" I think it's safe to say neither Lewis or Rodrigues fits that mould, whilst they can be in the category of forward players like Humphrys it's safe to say neither fit what the head coach wanted. The fact remains last year we were saying we hadn't replaced Norwoods physicality and presence upfront, combine that the loss of Cole and his goals, we still haven't bought a central goalscoring striker in the traditional mould.
I know Darrell gets hammered on here but his options are pretty limited. I very much doubt the additions made in the last transfer window are anything like what he wanted. I do wonder, if he were relived of his duties, who we can realistically expect who would massively improve this squad.
I think we should concentrate on what we have not what we don't have. Our scoring is compatible with most teams at the top and long may it continue. I'll just add the Lewis deal all though signed after the window was a deal the club had been working on.
Fair enough, I did mean a goal scorer and thought using the work striker instead of forward made that clear but can see that wasn’t the case.
We've no choice but to concentrate on what we have. Still don't see how either Rodrigues or Lewis improve us forward wise. More numbers yes, but improvement on quality......looking like a no I'd say.
I was surprised that DC called him out post-match for putting a shift in and was "Back to his best". I thought it was a great bit of play to setup the second goal, but I wouldn't go that far.
I agree. If he thinks that was a good "shift" then that maybe part of the problem in that DC can't get the best out of the players
You’ve lost me on that. I’ve never mentioned a target man. I’m merely asking when did wingers start being referred to as forwards? Martin Devaney wasn’t a forward. Nor was Jamal Campbell-Ryce. Or Harvey Barnes. Humphrys is a winger for me. Which is why he hasn’t scored in 102 days trying to play up front. Signed to give Clarke the option of playing 4-4-2, 4-3-3, 3-4-3 etc. Having to play as a striker because of injuries, lack of options.
That's a bit of a cop out response mate, we obviously have to go with what we have now, but there's no hiding place this summer, we can't just keep adopting a mend and make do attitude if we are serious about getting out of this league. If we are accepting a lowering of expectations then I have no problem, however we can't keep hearing the P word being peddled out with some glaring deficiencies around recruitment. This year was supposedly a bigger playing budget than last year.
The transfer window is history now and nowt we can do about it. Just hope the ‘Head Coach (hate that term) can get a tune out what he is got left to play with. Note - I never expected a Striker from the French 3rd Division to hit the ground running. Time will tell.
The confusing thing for me about Humphrys being a winger is all the stuff about "bringing the violence" when he signed. In Brian's defence, it did sound like we'd just signed an old-fashioned-all-elbows centre forward.
I don’t remember any of that, but then, I don’t really do much social media so I probably missed it. I can only go on what little I knew of him at the time. And he was used as a winger in a 4-3-3. But as Brian points out, Salah plays the same role and he’s a forward. So what do I know? Nowt.
I think the understanding of a winger is different now, as we don’t see many 4s in the midfield anymore, and only see wider players (typically) in a front 3 now then they are wingers and as they’re often the furthest players forward, I would say they can and should be classed as forwards also.
