Not quite mate, matter is related to energy by Einstein's famous equation e = mc2 (c squared), where e is energy, m is mass and c is the speed of light. Hence a small amount mass can be created by destroying a lot of energy and likewise a lot of energy can be created by destroying a small amount of mass - when you burn something, the mass of the combustion products never exactly equals the mass of the original fuel and oxygen - this missing mass is converted into energy (heat). Of course nuclear reactions are much more energetic than chemical ones so that larger amounts of mass are converted into huge amounts of energy. So throughout our lives, our bodies continually create and destroy matter in order to drive the chemical reactions that give us that life.

This has become a far more intellectual thread than Trump deserved.

You forgot something. Religion is a man-made thing so in the final analysis, the bigotry, homophobia and sexism were codified into the religion by the people (almost entirely men) who wrote the scriptures. The best example of this is the New Testament which was basically made up by the founders of the Christian faith some 200 years after the death of Jesus, thousands of miles away from Judea, in Rome. Incidentally, I accept the historic evidence for a prophet called Jesus who lived 2000 years ago whose life and death were used as a convenient place to hang their dogma.

I strongly disagree. Why do you think gay marriage was illegal until relatively recently?

Yes, the illegality of gay marriage in the UK was heavily influenced by historic religious beliefs and long-standing social norms rooted in Christian doctrine. For much of British history, Christianity—particularly the Church of England and the Roman Catholic Church—held a dominant influence over moral and legal standards. Traditional Christian teachings defined marriage as a union between a man and a woman, primarily for the purposes of procreation and family stability. This shaped the legal definition of marriage and the broader social understanding of relationships.

Homosexuality itself was criminalised in England under the Buggery Act of 1533 during the reign of Henry VIII, which made sodomy punishable by death. While the death penalty for this was eventually abolished, homosexuality remained illegal and socially stigmatised for centuries. It wasn’t until the Sexual Offences Act 1967 that homosexual acts between consenting men over the age of 21 were decriminalised in England and Wales (Scotland followed in 1980 and Northern Ireland in 1982).

The idea of marriage as a religious and legal institution tied to heterosexual unions remained deeply embedded even after decriminalisation. Civil partnerships for same-sex couples were introduced in 2004 under the Civil Partnership Act, which granted most of the same legal rights as marriage without the religious or symbolic status. Full marriage equality only came with the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act 2013, which allowed same-sex couples in England and Wales to marry. Scotland passed similar legislation in 2014, and Northern Ireland followed in 2020, after years of political and legal pressure.

The resistance to legalising gay marriage reflected not only religious opposition but also conservative social attitudes. The Church of England, for example, remains divided on the issue, even though same-sex civil marriages are now legally recognised. The shift toward legal acceptance was driven largely by broader social changes, including increasing public support for LGBTQ+ rights and a decline in religious influence over political decision-making.

While it’s true that the very matter that makes up our bodies is borrowed from the universe and will eventually return to it, becoming part of other forms of matter throughout the rest of time, the idea that consciousness continues beyond death has no basis in scientific fact. The atoms and molecules that make up our bodies were forged in the hearts of stars billions of years ago, and after death, they will break down and be recycled into other forms of life and matter. However, consciousness—the state of self-awareness and perception—is a product of complex neural activity in the brain. When the brain ceases to function at death, the processes that give rise to consciousness also end. No scientific evidence has ever shown that consciousness can persist independently of the brain or that it can exist in any form once brain activity stops. While ideas of an afterlife or the continuation of consciousness are deeply rooted in religious and philosophical traditions, they remain unsupported by empirical evidence.

Alan Turing, the man who cracked the Enigma code during the war and the man who defined what a modern computer would do was prosecuted under the homosexuality act and was chemically castrated as an alternative to a prison sentence in 1952. Our draconian laws based on religious doctrine from medieval times did this to a National hero merely a decade after he did the work which many have claimed did more than anything else to win the war.

Just ordered a new Tesla. Choosing the colour was tricky though.

You see a lot of ‘SS Black’ and ‘Stalingrad White’ ones around but was tempted by ‘Panzer Grey’ or ‘Stuka Green.’ In the end I went for ‘Third Reich Red’ as it’s got a 1,000 year guarantee on the paintwork. Nice one Elon.

I was thinking more about the justification of violence tbh. I've not read the Koran or owt though so you may have a point if you're talking about violence...

Some still think he’s great, and that he’s sorting out the country. Nothing will change their minds, as they’ve picked their side and only tune in to what they want to be told.
