We’ve beaten Port Vale and Shrewsbury by that score (when we had proper strikers like Allan Clarke and Eddie Loyden). I don’t recall us losing 6-2 though.
And Millar’s free kick. I learned an important lesson that day. I can remember seeing my mum through the window as me and my dad walked up to the back door and expected to walk in like the returning heroes, to a big party atmosphere, as we still had family round from the day before. But not only were none of them aware of our result, they didn’t seem to care. And as I described all the goals to them, in minute detail, they seemed to care less with every goal. I threw my dad an anxious look, that he could sense meant “Dad, what is this? Are there really people whose life doesn’t revolve around Barnsley Football Club?” And he returned a half-smile that meant “No son, some people just don’t give a ****”. So I went upstairs to play with my new Subbuteo set. Once I’d discovered where the cat had hidden the ball, that was.
I do remember some 5-2 wins for us, but not any 6-2 wins or losses. For example, what about that 5-2 come back win, at First Division West Ham in the Lg cup, in season '87. I think Steve Agnew actually had some long hair in those days lol.
But did those previous heavy defeats mean as little as this last one? I think an awful lot of people have adopted a couldn't care less attitude.
Right, I'm pretty certain. I was normally Ponty end, but we were visiting family in Shafton who always sat in the WSU, so stayed with them.
Also beat us 6-1 in 2010 Man City have done a 5-0, a 5-1 and a 7-1 this millennium but not a 6-2. Ipswich beat us 6-1 in Bassett's season. My memory is that if we concede 6 we usually concede 7.
WBA have done us 7-0 on two occasions. Then there was the famous Reading defeat in 1979 which led to Norman taking the lads darn pit.
I remember that well. It earned the team a trip down Barnsley Main Colliery to meet reality. It shook them.
