And that worked very well for us ,until we let him go. Loved the time under Hecky. Felt we could have done more to keep him.
It goes far deeper than results though. There was little sense of progression with player development and how the team was playing. Something simple but obvious with putting humphrys out wide shows at least Conor has the initiative to change things up instead of us meandering along and whinging about the players not turning up week after week.
Congrats Conor....think we all kind of knew he would get it. Good luck lad...I agree with "better the devil you know" mantra. I was genuinely concerned who we may bring in. Hope he puts his own stamp on things....and knows one or two players from his travels, who can fit in and play the way HE wants to be succesful.
Its the same old question everytime a new hc is announced " are the board gonna support him"' you keep hoping they're gonna learn by their mistakes but they never seem to' or in Nareevs case he doesn't seem to think they've made any.
A manager who is passionate for the club or a manager who is here cos he’s been sacked elsewhere???? Good luck CH……..If you need any coaching tips or advice you’ll find plenty on the BBS!!!
“…blah, blah…cheap option…blah, blah…” Previous ‘cheap options’ include Norman Hunter, Danny Wilson and Andy Ritchie.
Good appointment. But regardless of manager a big summer of recruitment ahead, players in and out. Ultimately Conor will be a scapegoat around this time next year if we aren’t in the top six
I don’t think Clarke was doing a bad job at all. I think during the period results worsened we had periods with both Roberts & Earl out, he had no end of issues with the keeper situation which I’m assuming he didn’t cause, Jalo was barely fit for him, Watters seemed to barely be available. I think his big problem was that he did so well initially & had us up in the play offs around Christmas time. I think it built a false image of how good the squad was. When people made their pre-season predictions on here most felt that we were significantly weaker than last season & I think we can all agree that the January transfer window was a disaster. I still think he was made a scapegoat for the failures of the board.
He knew what was coming and took the opportunity whilst it was there. And his career since has proven how good he is imho. Would love him back at some point.
I don’t get that. Clarke played Humphrys wide numerous times. His showing playing wide against Blackpool was one of the laziest displays I’ve seen a Barnsley player put in.
I think he was doing an average job overall but his entire vibe had changed over the course of the season. Performances were awful & the trust had gone between him, board & players. Didn't work and he had to go in the end.
They’ve clearly had this pretty much sewn up since sacking Clarke - but have had to wait until we actually won a game before announcing it. The fact it took six games to do that really ought to have had some influence. That said - it was inevitable, it was always going to be CH, and whilst I’m pretty underwhelmed, it isn’t a surprise and I wish him nothing but success. Of course I don’t. I fear his appointment is another indictment of those running the club though. Look at the cold hard facts. He has been here all season. Took a lot of the training all season. Has had six games in caretaker charge and managed one win - and a total of five points. Having failed to beat four teams sitting well below us in the table. The last game was great. Really good. They do look more organised - and he’s altered the back three to a four. Even before we won there were small shoots of green encouragement, if not results. Ok. Realistically is that enough to get a permanent gig and a two year deal? Not even close. But Stevie Wonder would have seen it coming. This isn’t an appointment primarily designed to get promoted (not that I doubt that’s what they want), it’s an appointment to appeal to the more sentimental of thinking to drive season ticket sales. Just like his return as a ‘player’ was last summer. Cynical, yet predictable action. But that isn’t Hourihane’s fault. Go well Conor. Work hard, and try to get the wage stealing Mladen Sormaz to listen to you about what we actually need this summer - which is character and backbone as much as it is quality and ability. We need proper leadership - both from you and on the field.
Look, we didn't know what we were getting with Danny Wilson all those years ago and it turned out ok. I'm happy that we have set CH on as head coach, he knows the players, they appear to be very happy with him, and it has been an early appointment rather than a summer one where nobody knows anybody. Good luck CH, we can still see you lifting those two trophies for us, hope it repeats itself.
On a one off display against Blackpool I would agree that was diabolical but I didn’t see any evidence of that in the games prior. 2 games prior to his sacking we played the best stuff we have all season against Lincoln & were 4 up before we took the best players off to rest them for the Charlton game. I don’t think you get a performance like that if there’s an issue with the manager & players.
To be fair Ritchie was unbeaten in his first 5 matches as caretaker manager and won manager of the month in his first month which is quite the difference from Hourihanes caretaking tenure.
