Can’t get my head around why they did it.

What on earth was the motive? Wanting the tourists that went to Northumberland to come to Cumbria?

    Very weird thing to do.

And there may not be a smoking gun in this case but dear me who are they trying to kid? I can’t imagine the jury needing to take days to deliberate over this one.

The court image drawn of one of the accused looks like the Van Gogh self portrait. Not relevant but an observation nonetheless…

I hope the trial leaves no stone unturned. The jury will twig eventually.

And on a serious note... I detest mindless crime like this. That living sycamore had been there beautifying the area for hundreds of years. Now its dead thanks to two morons.

I don’t know why they didn’t stick the tree back, decent joiner could have dovetailed it or at least a couple of dowels.

You can't believe it, the Italian juror said he wirra sicka more and wood now coni fir with hisa fell'or jurras.
Sam aras the defence solicitor reckons the crown are barking up the wrong tree and his clients are stumped at the accusations and in reality are suckers for a laugh

Needless Vandalism at its finest unfortunately,
Morons who's punishment when handed out should wipe the smile of their faces by hitting them hard not only on their time but also their pockets
Maybe then the rest of the idiots out there take note too.

The Sycamore gave more to society then these two will ever have given if they live to be a million years. And then some.

I don't think you're wrong with this assessment. Clearly the morons should have plead guilty first up, but by dragging this out over a trial they will more than likely receive a significant custodial sentence.

They're not making it easy for their defence lawyers are they? Looks like they are on a fishing expedition to find some remote and inconceivable procedural way to beat the rap. I'm afraid only jail will do for these two clowns plus a significant fine.

Irrelevant. Rape sentencing is too lenient. And woefully under-convicted.

Not to be debated in this thread really - but I doubt anyone will disagree.

I would hope those facts don’t cloud judgement here and reduce sentencing for this. Not as heinous maybe no - but still despicable.

Unanimous guilty verdict. The tragic thing is there was no motive whatsoever. No vendetta, no planning gripe, no evil landowner, no money involved. Just two bored idiots who thought it would be a laugh to cut a tree down.

Will then turn over a new leaf or branch out into something else? Have the authorities twigged what the root cause of this crime was?

Wow, didn't see that coming! I thought the defence that Carruthers "had actually meant to say 'he' instead of [an operation like] 'we' [did]" was totally convincing.

I wonder how much their defence lawyers cost them.

I think a fine of having to plant a million sycamore trees each would be just.
