I really don't get the Liverpool fans gripe here' he's leaving' players leave clubs all the time' why is this transfer causing such anger' there wasn't all this fuss when legends like Gerrard' Fowler and Owen left' it seems very strange..
To be fair Fowler left after a few Injuries and was out of the team, he was also sold for a big fee at the time to Leeds. Gerrard left due to age and he wasn't in the team as much anymore like Fowler. So you can't really compare them two to Trent leaving, Owen would be a good comparison but I think he's not fondly thought of in Liverpool anyway.
Gerrard left at the end of his career to go to America when he was no longer first choice. Fowler left to go to Leeds when he was no longer first choice. Owen got loads of abuse for going to Real Madrid.
I think it's some Liverpool fans, not all. Trent doesn't owe them anything and tbh if I were then I'd be happy that Connor Bradley's ready to step up and can duke and Sakah have signed new contract s. 2 out of 3'ain't bad!
Michael Owen & Steve McManaman got some really bad abuse when leaving for Real Madrid. Majority of Liverpool fans call both players 'traitors' Steven Gerrard put in a transfer request two times when Chelsea and then Real Madrid wanted to sign him but got death threats each time
Their gripe is well documented. He was going to move on, and would have gone with their blessing. But RM pressured him by saying they weren't going to pay a fee. To that end, after being invested in from 6 years of age, then paid handsomely by the club since his late teens, they are getting no return on investment. Not my thoughts. But the concencus of the LFC social media bubble.
It's a strange argument in my opinion. They paid nothing for him and he's left after playing nearly 400 games. Not sure what they think he owes em. If a player decides he wants to honour his contract and then try something new then that's fair enough I think. Odd bunch them Liverpool fans sometimes.
I think a big part of it is a kind of pride thing. I think there was a bit more understanding back when McManaman & Owen went as Liverpool weren’t a top club. This time round he’s effectively joining a weaker team. They aren’t exactly in a crisis but Real Madrid are probably in their worst state for around 20 years. There’s got to be a lot of frustration when you’re the best team in the country & one of your best players & a local lad wants to go play for a weaker side right now (albeit they are the biggest club in the world). I’m not defending any shirt burning or abuse on social media but I get why fans are annoyed. It felt gutting to me when we were losing players like Moore to Wigan, Morris to Luton & Pinnock to Brentford, clubs that historically are no bigger than ours & these were players who had only been with us a short time.
