    Whilst I agree.
The older I've got I have reservations and a battle of conscience.
When I hear of the atrocities of pre-meditated murder. Forensic evidence, DNA has come on. Leaps and bounds. And are the benchmarks in most cases.
We cannot turn the clock back. And I cannot imagine the pain innocents and their families went through.
But in the end, its also modern science that corrects the injustice. The police in some circumstances in years gone by needed a scapegoat. To clear a case. And centuries ago trials were a laughing stock. Eg Witches trials.
I've allus said put yourselves in the victims families shoes. And that's when I struggle.
Others I'm aware will totally disagree with me and that's fine. I 100% had that mindset at one time.

Cleared on dna evidence after being in prison for 38 years…

DNA evidence for which the technology existed at the time of his conviction and has been in regular legal use for at least 80 - 90% of his incarceration - and after years of denying him the right to have it explored.

Convicted on some ropey evidence that bite marks broadly matched his teeth and a confession pretty much beaten out of him by police, because he was quiet, of low intellect and easy to manipulate.

A dental expert has also criticised the evidence that the bite marks matched his teeth too.

Very much a case of them deciding they’d got the guilty party and proving it afterwards. By any means necessary.

Poor sod. A lifetime wasted due to incompetent and assumptive police work. He’s spent more years in jail than out of it.

Thoughts go to the victim’s family too - who now have it confirmed (though in reality they’ve known for a few years) that the perpetrator of her brutal killing is at large and unknown.

Not a good day. This gentleman should and likely will be compensated greatly and I sincerely hope he lives a comfortable life, with the freedom his innocence commands.

That's where I am. Tbh on many cases. But he has major mental health issues aparantly and the authorities need to be brought to task. For not monitoring him.

There are 2 sides to cases like this, first and obviously this poor bloke has spent most of his life behind bars for something he didn't do. Also some scum bag has got away with it for 38 years just because the justice system is heavily loaded against allowing such appeals. Had his efforts been successful 30 years ago when DNA evidence became available, the police could have reopened the case and might have found the evil git.

This conversation is taking an odd turn. Some seem to be suggesting he’s spent 38 years in prison for a crime he didn’t commit because of ‘science’. The reason has more to do with corruption. Not that those involved will pay any kind of price.

According to what I heard on the radio, the particular DNA test didn't become available till 2015, his appeal for a retrial in that year was refused when the evidence had been reexamined by the new test and showed the semen sample couldn't have come from him.

I'm not sure what you mean by corruption. In this case, it's more likely the fact that the justice system really, really doesn't like admitting that it made a mistake. Unless you mean that the police fitted him up for it.

Read a report today that suggested he'd get a million pounds. For losing his freedom for 38 years. I think they missed a zero off that figure.
