Remember palace coming to Oakwell in championship on a Tuesday night witj nowt to play for and being really load.
TBH I find the whole trying to be ultras a bit cringeworthy, I've been to over 20 Serie A games over the last decade Inter, Genoa, Bologna and Atalanta and its completely different. The ultras in Italy are woven into the fabric of the club and its much more than just 90 mins. There's somewhat of a glorification of it happening in this country with some fanbases dressing head to toe in black pretending to be ultras, I find some of it pretty pathetic. Fair play to Palace yesterday. As for Oakwell I think having a team to be proud of or seen to be making progress and a sense of "building something" is massively important to Barnsley people, a sense of pride is a huge thing to this town, we can forgive results to a degree if we see blood sweat and tears. The last few years have left me devoid of emotion, you can't get attached to players or managers anymore such is the turnaround of their departure. Turning the home form around is vital, 8 home wins in 32 attempts and 17 months is pathetic. Give us players that put a shift in and some sense of stability and growth and Oakwell takes care of itself.
Wasn’t the Ora Band, hounded out of Oakwell after a couple of seasons? Remember folk moaning about the ‘noise’ I know I wouldn’t want to be anywhere near the big drum
Again, people are saying that 'winning football matches' is all that counts. So why is it then in recent seasons, when we've been winning matches and have got to the Play offs. But loads of fans still just kept moaning regularly.
How many clubs have a band? Best clubs I can think of for atmosphere certainly don't - don't remember ORA band doing an awful lot to get the crowd going
They can never be anything like, it's a different culture completely, our clubs wouldn't allow the control that they have got over their clubs. I take the young un to Milan games every season, l've also been in the Inter and Juve Ultra Curves (which is rare when they control the tickets) so like yourself I've been to plenty of Serie A games but in response to the OP, that's the reason in the change of Palaces atmosphere at games - they created an Ultra group, l remember being there when Kevin Miller was in the nets for us and Selhurst Park was a library.
The old "Come on you Reds" echoing around from three sides of the ground seemed good. Mid 80's were very grim indeed for, as you say, obvious reasons. Probs a sign of the times Acido lad? Folk seem more whiney to me these days!
Yeah and in fairness we all do it sometimes, I know I do. But when some fans are constantly having a go, and have decided that the new manager/coach is sh*t. Even in the very first few weeks of a new season!!. I just think that's unbelievable.
Firstly, I will admit I don't particularly like the ultra style of support and I don't think it works in England.... but.... To get anything like what Palace have at Oakwell would take a total shift in both outlook and tolerance from everyone. At present, replicating what they do at Oakwell would lead to many arrests, banning orders and all sorts of bother for those involved. Selhurst Park used to be a morgue, absolutely dead. It took a group of fans a long long time to create the atmosphere they have now and it would take similar here. Talk about winning football and success is fine and does contribute but what it actually takes is enough like minded fans grouping together and keeping at it game after game so that noise, chanting and dare I say standing becomes the norm in an area and is therefore both accepted and participated with. Over the years we've had pretty sizeable groups in the corner of the Ponty End giving it a good go but after a while this dissipates again. I don't think we should necessarily aim for what Palace have created, but there's plenty of clubs that have good sections of how support making a fair racket. It's possible.
Maybe if the players looked like they cared more and were putting in a shift as a team it would help? Loads of rucks in the premier league yesterday, yes its all handbags and maybe performative but when was the last time we had some of that? We just accept getting bullied, it looks weak and doesn't exactly instill passion on the fans - passion on the pitch equals passion off the pitch. I was watching the Chelsea Man U game, Bruno Fernandes, might be a bit of bell but at least he looks like he cares, at least he is trying to lead and get things going for them, even after the appalling season and with little to play for. where's our Bruno Fernandes?
Really though ? "if anyone coughs at Barnsley they are told to shut up" If anyone coughs? What? like a cough? if anyone coughs at Barnsley they are told to shut up I am not having a go btw. The statement just reminded me of this clip of the fantastic Stewart Lee
Glad all over sounded pretty **** when they were losing tbf. Really pleased they won and have the chance to get on a plane for some European adventures. As others have said, winning or battling against the odds will create the atmosphere. Just hope it happens next season!
