Well yes, winning something means they have despite finishing 17th!

I said a while back I’d rather finish 17th & win a trophy than finish 2nd & win nothing & then Spurs have gone & done it!

Ultimately football is about winning things & making memories. The Spurs fans will never forget this final just like (on a lesser scale) we will never forget them Wembley wins in 2016.

If you’re a chairman then finishing in the champions league spots is great for balancing the books. If you’re a fan you want the memories.

Arteta is a complete bottle job. Failed miserably given the vast sums he's spent. I can't see Arsenal winning anything next season either.

Won a euro pot and qualified for CL compared to merely qualifying for CL. No discussion really.

They’ve ended up with both somehow

That’s the thing though. Winning this trophy means they are in the champions league!

I can’t make an argument to say Arsenal had a better season. Second in the league, semi of the champions league - their name is on nothing. They won nothing.

They start next season having failed on all fronts - Spurs were absolute dogger a lot of the time but have a big shiny cup and are in the league stage of the champions league just like their neighbours - with all the money that comes with it.

If we accept that Peterborough have had a better season than all but 3 other teams in League One i don’t see how you can refute it.

I don’t see that myself. The Tottenham fans I know are fairly miserable and Ange will probably still get the sack. It’s Ben a harrowing awful season for them and putting lipstick on a pig is just that.

They will get absolutely spanked in the CL. Even in financial terms I think entry gets them 18 million quid. Each place in the league gets teams £3 million. Arsenal just weren’t as strong this year. Injuries and loss of form it happens to all teams eventually.

All of that is true but they’ve won a European trophy. Ultimately this season Liverpool, Newcastle, Palace & Spurs fans have all enjoyed one of the best days of their lives while Arsenal fans have spent most of the season moaning about injuries (they haven’t actually had many) & that they’ve stagnated whilst choosing to spend their budget on a 4th left back rather than bringing in a forward.

Something in all that. But i suspect when they are hammers 3-0 at home to Brighton at the weekend the euphoria will soon wear off.

Theres something of a myth around centre forward at Arsenal. They certainly need one but they need one that can do what Havertz does but also score goals. That profile is pretty rare in world football I can only think of Isak who is probably unaffordable or Kane which is unimaginable. Signing an out and out forward won’t work for them as there plan is based on that linking.

By the same measure, having won the FA Trophy, Aldershot have had a better season than Arsenal.

    Not really.

Unlike Tottenham, Aldershot aren’t in both the premier league and champions league next season with the income that brings, or the attraction to the club being able to offer champions league football gives to better players.

My argument wasn’t just about winning a trophy.

I for example wouldn’t argue Chelsea had a better season than Arsenal if they win the conference league but finish outside the top five. If they do win the conference league and finish fifth; I’d say they probably have. Similar with Newcastle.

Palace fans will be delirious with the cup win - is their season better than Arsenal’s, given they get entry to only the europa league? In relative terms yes, realistically no.

Spurs have been terrible but have a major trophy and will be in the champions league. Other than the difference in prize money based on league position (which isn’t insignificant but still a comparative drop in the ocean), Arsenal have in reality achieved little Spurs haven’t, and don’t have an honour against their name like Spurs do.

I'd still rather be in Arsenal's shoes, Spurs have won one of the tin pot trophies, Chelsea will probably win the other one. If you're a supporter of the big clubs there's only one trophy.

Arsenal failed miserably in that 'tin pot' trophy. Losing to clubs like sporting and olympiacos.

I do agree that Havertz has done a decent job. I just think they needed more depth & should have signed another forward to complement what they’d got. Havertz can drop into midfield & Jesus can go wide so it’s not like none of them would get minutes if they’re all fit.

A bigger problem for me is the lack of goals from Martinelli & Odegaard. They need to chip in with goals far more than they do.

They were in the Champions League, doing very well as well, we are talking about this season. Let's see how both teams get on next season in the big boy cup.

Makes absolutely no difference how well they've done. They claim to have best defence in league, best goalkeeper in league (even over Alisson, crazy), one of the best midfielders in Rice and right wingers in Saka. Ultimately they've failed in winning a trophy. Spurs haven't- they will both be in the same position next season when things start to matter again mate.

Spurs are in another Final on 13th August. Super Cup v PSG or Inter Milan. Turned into a cracking season. Special memory over league position every time.

I'd be buzzing if they won Super Cup too. It's a glorified friendly in some quarters but it has prestige.
