They were bought for £3m and we gave them back with a £3bn golden handshake. It's like a sale, but we handed the proceeds back.
But it's ok, cos we get to use the airbase for 99 years. For £101m a year rent.

Something wholly insignificant but which will be painted as the worst betrayal in history by pearl-clutching Tories and Reform morons

Another bit of the world that we stole handed back to its rightful owner I believe.

They now rent the airfield to us as we asked nicely and the price seemed ok to them.

Despite the Tories actually doing the deal. Starner just finished exactly what they planned to do

Despite all the loud protestations from all the usual suspects, given the actual truth this was the correct and grown up thing to do to keep the defence lines in place and to be the most economically efficient.

We had no option but to take action here. Internationally, pretty much the whole world didn’t accept our sovereignty of Chagos. It would have gone to international court and sovereignty would have been given to Mauritius anyway. That was known years ago - and is why the Tories conducted 11 rounds of negotiation on the terms of the signing over to Mauritius and renting the main island and base back. International court would have given them the sovereignty had we not volunteered it.

In that scenario, we’d have lost control of the military base, and Mauritius would have been able to allow others - I.e. China, to set up bases there.

By taking preventative action, we’ve voluntarily done a deal, we retain control of the main island with the military base, will have UN and international law behind us, will have Indian Ocean presence for military use for a hell of a lot cheaper than running an aircraft carrier. It’s actually a no brainer. £100million a year is actually small fry and we will get a lot of that back from the USA; and it means the base as an asset remains in our control as opposed to being taken over by the Russians or Chinese.

But because Nigel and Badasfuck don’t like it, it’s wrong… I despair.

    But it isn’t a surprise.

Exactly Starmer signing off on a deal brought about by the Tories.

… because he doesn’t dismiss everything solely on the grounds the other side began the negotiation - as he knew it was in the best interests of the country?

    No?

    Excellent explanation.

But I fear a worrying number of people will not bother to think about the issues involved here and will be sucked in by the Tory media, whose headlines make appeal for the hard of thinking.

I really hope that if Badenoch has the temerity to raise this deal in Parliament, Keir again embarrasses her by highlighting her repeated refusals to attend Privy Council terms briefings to explain the security situation to her. Her tabloid-style interventions are made from a position of ignorance whilever she declines to receive such information. She will be lucky to survive beyond November, when a challenge to her position becomes permissible.

Good. Next leader needs charisma. Thatcher, Blair, Cameron and Boris all had charisma. If you look at all the failures. Major, Brown, May and Sunak. All no charisma at all.

These days it's more PR than policy. I always thought Alistair Campbell would have made a good Labour leader.

Worryingly I think Farage has that X factor the public lap up. It's just a shame he isn't the Conservative leader and instead represents a Nazi party.

My ex is one of those. We have to keep in touch because of our daughter and grandkids. She was up on her back legs yesterday quoting the RW Press. I gently pointed out that it was all lies and mentioned Fact Checking sites. Final Answer: I don’t know about that but Nigel is my man. He talks sense. After which I gave up, and uttered my usual prayer: “Thank You O Lord for sending her Boss to carry her off. “

Mr Dawson, I say unto thee in all seriousness, get thi money on Boris Johnson for next prime minister (14/1 generally). In a couple of years he will parachute into a safe seat and thereafter return in glory/ignominy (delete as appropriate). Inspired by Trump's example (which shows that even the maddest things can happen) he will position himself as the man to rescue the Tories from Farage. You heard it here first.
