RECOVERY PLUS - £79.00 last year

Quoted - £114 to renew for this year

Checked on line prices and quoted - £64 - which I've accepted.

(Hope ancient banger 'survives' for another year.)

The AA are worse, I'd been with them for years, it had crept up to 90 odd quid, saw the renewal letter come and ignored it....it auto renewed at around £200. I was out of the 14 day period when I looked at it but got on the phone to them...the lad at the other end just told me I'd auto renewed on a great package....I was covered for xyz and could drive almost anywhere in the world on the new deal....it didn't seem to phase him when I pointed out I didn't have a passport. I told them unless it was reduced I would cancel it, stand the cost and go elsewhere. They only knocked £45 off and allegedly made a note not to auto renew me. The following year they were going to auto renew but I stopped it and after only one breakdown in 35 years went to Green Flag. The AA lost a lot of easy money after that.

I used to get breakdown cover for my van as part of some other package, but when that ended I got quotes and they were pretty steep once I added European cover. I had a dig around and found out that if you get your Ford vehicle serviced by an authorised Ford dealership, even if you didn't buy it from them or have it serviced by them from new, then you get a year's roadside assistance, including European cover, for free. That's even if all you have done is an interim "health check", which in my case cost me 30% less than I was being quoted for the breakdown cover alone. They don't tend to shout about it though - the last couple of times I've been they didn't give me the paperwork until I asked for it and I was told that they've been instructed to do that, so be sure to get it all formalised. Full Ts & Cs here.

I use a company called Rescue my car, I’ve been with them for about 6 years, they use local breakdown companies, l’ve had to use their services one or twice over the years, never had an issue, just renewed with them, national roadside assistance plus home start, £101 for 2 vehicles or £61 for both if you have a £40 excess

That's luck bordering on freakish. Mind you, the last twice I've needed my breakdown cover (AA and Britannia respectively) it descended into farce and I'd have been better just googling a local garage and arranging recovery myself.

I get mine (UK & European) for all cars in the family through a packaged FlexPlus joint account from Nationwide.

It's £18/month, but you also get Worldwide Travel Insurance and Mobile Phone Insurance (Loss or Demage), and they currently pay you £100 each June for having an account with them (makes the net cost £116 for the lot).
