How do you come to the conclusion that they would be relegated next season? They sacked the league off after Christmas to concentrate on Europe & still finished 13 points clear of the drop zone with a load of cash to spend on strengthening the squad through him getting them into the champions league. Man Utd & Spurs were dreadful last season but as soon as they knew they weren’t qualifying for Europe via the league they gave up on it to concentrate on the Europa League. Let’s not kid ourselves that they were in any kind of relegation danger.
They appointed a far worse manager than Ten Hag. Ten Hag left them 4 points off the top 5 & won a trophy at the end of the season before.
And champions league qualification isn’t the main aim of most clubs. Look at Newcastle, they rested Isak away at Liverpool in the league to keep him fresh for the cup final which they won. This mentality that football is about qualifying for a tournament you aren’t good enough to win is what’s held Spurs back for 15 years.
No the funniest one was Wayne Wan*klyn, a former Reading player, in the 70s-80s. Just imagine it ehh, actually being called Wayne!.
You'll be surprised to learn that I'm not an avid Spurs supporter, so I don't have first-hand knowledge of all their performances in the last six months. Having said that, I did watch them beat a very good Eintracht Frankfurt side away from home in the Quarter Finals of the Europa League. The good management in winning the trophy was from getting the team qualified for the competition and then by successfully managing the league section as well as the knock-out phase to reach the final, which they still had to win regardless of the opposition. The club, as I alluded to in my initial post, wasn't used to winning things, and he's changed that. He backed himself and doubled down on winning the Europa League at the expense of the league, and he delivered a trophy.
Que. They just decided not to bother in the league for the last 5 months? That's a crazy statement. At what point did they make the decision to give up? Was it when they drew with Leicester on the opening day or when Ipswich beat them in November?
I don’t know if you’ve followed the league much but since Christmas the managers gave numerous interviews saying they were concentrating on the cups & they rested their players for the European games. I’m not making it up, it happened for months. It was a very brave gamble & it paid off.
To be fair, if Romero & Ven were fit, by far their best centre halves, they'd have finished 5 if you went of their points per game. Their injuries have been horrific this year. He's had to rely on poor players & kids for a lot of games, yes, he totally fked the premier league off to focus on european cup - and it worked. Had they lost it fair enough, but given the circumstances I would have given him another year. Be interesting to see how many injuries they get when they stop playing 'Ange-ball'...
Just what are the expectations though at Tottenham, with the owners and the fans. And how much of them are 'realistic' ?. I'm guessing that winning the pointless Europa League Cup thing, and doing really badly in the Premier League... to them, is just unacceptable.
It seems mental to me that on his last game to win silverware he finally decided to actually play a system to suit the occasion and the opposition rather that rigidly and stubbornly try to enforce his own style on the match. He knew he didn't have the players available to try play the way he wanted in that final, so he set up more defensively and absorbed all the useless pressure man united tried exerting onto them. He turned it into a boring, boring game but it got the job done and won the trophy for them that had eluded them for 17 years. He finally realised he couldn't be stubborn if he wanted to win, and then he was sacked a few week later.
Correct decision. Very average managers who’s record is shocking over the two year he was there. Simon Davey is proof that a good cup run doesn’t make you a managerial genius
It’s so obviously the right decision I can’t believe there’s any debate. Taking a good Spurs side to 17th in the Prem is really **** management.
I'd wonder what the effect on the players will be. They certainly speak very highly of him. Anything less than a stellar league position will see the new guy and Levy under serious pressure.
