Yeah exactly, and I was thinking the same. He put us in that relegation mess to begin with, but admittedly he had us looking like a better, completely different team in June/July. And when it came down to the points, he didn't officially 'mathematically' keep us up did he, it was all down to Wigan's points deduction. But they did break the rules and we deserved to take advantage of it, simples!!.
I take it you didn’t go to Cardiff match before lockdown then , was as bad as it gets. That season was the first that I can remember when folks I knew(season ticket holders) started to stay away as the football was so poor. Granted we survived when the season started again but I honestly don’t believe we would have done without the break, fair doos to Struber at the end but he lucky with the shutdown.
Yeah he/we took advantage of something that another team did wrong, so fair enough. What did fans think though the following season, we were only a few games in and it was looking like being more of the same, or even worse. Although I think he wanted improvements didn't he, so we wouldnt have to go through another awful escape act season. Maybe he was also given false promises by the club, I don't know.
Genuinely don’t know what to make of him. gave us some amazing memories and got a lot out of some average players, but then insisted on playing Ritzmaier, which I’m not sure is redeemable
The greatest escape in the clubs history, we forget that Brentford needed a win to gain promotion. We had a similar scenario at Derby but they were playing for nothing, we got mullered - just for context.
I reckon Struber will find out quickly, what Lee Johnson and Shaun O'Dismal eventually did (yeah him who lied his ar*se off when rejecting us). That Bristol City, as a club and fan base, have higher expectations than we do. For a start, they are a Championship club, and normally mid table. So surely they won't put up with last match relegation escape acts.
That's true. But as others have said, it was an amazing end of the season to stay up right at the death! The game before lockdown was horrendous though, so annoying that he seemed perfectly happy with a draw when we needed wins!
Fantastic at the end no doubt at all, the greatest escape for me however came with Flitcroft and that fantastic day ay Huddersfield, he also was crap the season after but didn’t get the credit I thought he deserved for keeping us up.
What makes you think their fan base has higher standards than us mate? Been in exactly same positions as us for majority of last 3 or so decades. Only difference is we've been in premier league and they haven't
Maybe because they have had more money to spend in the period you talking about, little Lee spent far more at Bristol than Barnsley mate
Well based on our current positions Frog. We can only dream of getting back into the Championship again one day, maybe. And our big fear at the moment is worrying about staying away from Lg Two. I think they are way above us at the moment in that subject, and have been for years.
Admittedly though, its fairytale stuff when you look back at the last two games, in the Struber escape act season. We were as good as down, and had to win twice, and hope for the best. And in both games, home v Notts Forest and away v Brentford, we won with 90+ stoppage time goals.
I don't really get why because they're doing better than us at the minute, they have higher standards? Did we have higher standards than them when we finished 5th in play offs? We must have different definitions of the word bud. Manchester united finished 15th, I wouldn't say Brentford have higher standards than them mate?
I did used to think that we were a bigger and better club, when we started playing them again in the early 90s. And I still also thought we could call ourselves a bigger club, when we stayed up and helped send them down, in the Flicker season. But if we'd gone up that day at Wembley more recently under Duff, it would have been really hard to stay up. And I don't think our present day 'realistic' expectations, should match theirs.
No I don't think so, mate. I think most fans would probably say they're a slighter bigger club than us. Though I don't think it's by much. I know they spent some time in the top flight in the 70s, but we've won major silverware and they haven't. It's been a crap couple of years. Both us & Bristol city have been largely championship clubs with spells in league one in my life time
It’s quite a tough job as 5th & 6th this season got very low points totals. He could realistically get more points & end up down in 8th or 9th.
I’m guessing Bristol City’s expectations will be playoffs again so could be a tough gig. I liked Struber here. Apart from his constant picking of Ritzmaier and Cardiff at home before lockdown. He got us playing some brilliant stuff in lockdown and we went from strength to strength.
