Has anyone suffered from plantar fasciitis before and if so, what did you end up needing to do to sort it and how long did it take? I believe that this is what I have in my left foot. It came on after a beach walk in March and shows no signs of going away. I have done the often ill advised Dr Google thing and read up on it - all the symptoms point directly at it being plantar fasciitis but I have no idea how to make the bloody thing go away. I have been to the docs and they have given me an info sheet to self refer for physio, which is what I have just done. But any advice gratefully received.
Try these from amazon. I had the same years ago and I still use these today without any plantar problems: Yogamedic, soft gel heel pads.
I’ve had it twice. I was advised to roll the sole of my foot around on a tennis ball. Seemed to help. Very painful and I hope it clears up quickly for you.
I had the socks, wore them on both feet even though it was only my right foot that was hurting. Also see if painkillers takes some of the pain away.
Yep. First got it playing football on a hard surface. Agonising. It’s like standing on a bruise. I got some orthotic insoles on the NHS which feel quite harsh initially but do make a difference. I’ve also tried various of the shelf insoles. I’m lucky that I can wear trainers for work. Sports direct have quite a good heat-map that when you stand in it it makes shoe advice based on your imprint. Calf stretches and foot extension are key exercises.
That's a great description. That's exactly what it's like. How long did you all find it took to go away?
My practise nurse prescribed naproxen but I am loathe to take them as they are strong and it feels ott given that you also have to take omeprazole to line the stomach first. I can cope with ibuprofen when I need it. I don't leave the house much Monday to Friday due to working from home so it's not like I am bashing it at the moment. But it's restricting what we do on a weekend.
It went away when I stopped playing football due to a different injury. However, it does come back after some games or long walks. I’ve recently started using the insoles again for that reason and it is managable although first steps in the morning still hurt. If I have a flare up I put a bottle of water in the freezer and once frozen use it as a foot roller.
Yes, tennis ball works and I have those insoles with arch support. Uncomfortable for the first couple of walks, then really help
These worked for me. Trial and error but the 3/4 ones I find better than the full length. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Plantar-Fa...ds=arch+support+inserts&qid=1750588595&sr=8-7
The first time I had it, I thought I'd broken my foot in my sleep by kicking the post in the night. Overnight, it went from nothing to couldn't bear any weight on the foot in the morning. Once the GP had ruled out gout as an alternative, and diagnosed PF, he said the only thing you could do was wait and it would go away again as quickly as it arrived. I wanted to punch him in the face at the time, as I was convinced he was talking ********. Then, about 10 days later, it did exactly as he described. It's the weirdest thing to suffer from, as there's no warning of it, and no middle ground when it's there. The socks (open-toed, compression type things) seemed to help a bit, and avoiding walking in bare feet or socks, especially on hard flooring, helps to stop it triggering (as it's caused by a tendon becoming stretched). Once it's there, its a waiting game for it to go away again, so trying to prevent it is the best thing you can do.
I’ve got orthotic insoles, take a bit of getting used to you have to increase the duration daily as it gives you shin splints ( did me anyway), now if I wear shoes without them in it gives me shin splints lol
I have had it and some of the worst pain ever. I contacted my GP who passed me to a physiotherapist who just gave me exercises to do. The rolling your sole over something works. I also changed my footwear in the house to something more spongey as we have laminate flooring. It has not come back touch wood.
Whilst working from home use a foot roller as I was in the same situation. I am sure it will go so I would avoid stronger painkillers if possible. Think about your footwear. I know Skechers can be dear but the insoles and cushioning are ace.
Yes suffered for 14 months constant pain, there's some very good exercises you can follow, just changing footware won't alone sort it you need to stretch the plantar muscle. Mine got so bad I had inserts made for my footwear but in the end the only thing that cured it was 3 courses of extracorporeal shockwave therapy under the NHS. Still get the odd twinge but if I was you I would start the process now with the NHS if your pain is intense, they'll offer you pain killers to start with but they just mask the issue and can often cause more damage as you start doing things you couldn't without them.
I have a bit of a shoe buying addiction. I have literally stacked up boxes of Skechers. So I am OK on that front. I have started to wear footwear in the house as the whole downstairs is hard flooring and I generally walk around bare foot. Trying to stop doing that. I am going to start doing the foot rolling thing whilst home and while working. Sounds like a great tip. Thanks everyone.
