I've seen a few people confidently saying this and i'm interested to know what they're basing it off. It certainly isnt any of the press or vlogger write-ups of 'top league one keepers', nor does it seem to be based on stats as he is comfortably bottom half in save percentage, for example. I'd be amazed if many of the folk saying it saw Stevenage muuch outside of the games with us, yet it seems to be being confidently asserted all over. Really interested to know how.
Disappointing but predictable to read some of the comments on FB - ‘he’s only on loan, he’s not a striker, clubs no ambition’ etc. but I’m happy with this one.
Stevenage fans saw him plenty and awarded him their Young Player of the year. They would have liked him back again.
65.7% save ratio 43.2% cleansheets ratio (16 from 37 games) Don’t forget the added context this was achieved at Stevenage as well not Birmingham or one of the other clubs in the league with an all star defence. I think this is a good signing personally.
16th in this https://footballleagueworld.co.uk/all-24-efl-league-one-clubs-goalkeepers-ranked-from-best-to-worst/ No idea about their credentials for making that assessment. Also, he's changed his name. Don't think he likes alliteration. Or maybe sounding so Irish.
Isn't 65% save ratio considered particularly bad? Killip for example had 69% and really wasn't very good.
i know keepers flourish later in their careers but I can't see how you can still say Smith is long-term number one if he isn't at League one level yet. See how this new lad gets on I suppose.
Jackson - Smith will be cursing the day he signed for us. Was Walsall's number 1. I'd rather be a number 1 than a number 2 any day of the week.
From Fotmob... No errors which is very encouraging. Great Sweeping and High Claims as well as Clean Sheets. The Save Percentage is a little worrying but I seem to recall Brad Collins having a similar percentage (66.7%) during the Ismael season. link
I’ve asked a Stevenage friend of mine about Cooer - he says we’ve signed a gem of a keeper & one of their best players last season
Personally? The many folk in the game whose opinion I trust. Not folk from Oakwell, by the way. Which now reads like I don't trust folk at BFC. Which isn't the case. He's "proper steady, safe pair of hands" I was told. "really good with his feet, sweeps up well when needed" was another. And "you don't notice him much, which as you know, is a good thing". And on most statistical sites and software platforms, he comes out well. Doesn't mean he'll be any good this coming season though. We'll have to see. But it looks a very sensible addition to me and I hope, the first of a good few who have proven themselves at the level. Time will tell.
The stats seem to point to a sweeper style keeper which may be required if they intend to play a high back line with the lack of pace in defence.
