Sounds like Conor is cracking the whip, hope he has us the fittest team in the league. Might be a few who don't fancy it.
I have a funny feeling there will be no signings involving a fee and it will be loans and free agents. Any fees from outgoing will be absorbed into the club to offset the deficit.
I think it may actually a case of fitness. We really do have some quality in the side (Connell, DKD, Russell, Phillips) just that they play like old men. You can't be a team full of passengers in this league and CH knows that.
Completely agree, get the defence and fitness levels sorted and I really don't think the squad is that far off getting in the top 6.
I don't think Conor has to re invent the wheel, Play off final, semi final and 4th around last January backs up the quality bit. The last 20 games of last season were a mystery, the Huddersfield game at home seemed to kill our confidence and we went from bad to worse.
I'd attribute much of last season's underperformance to fitness levels. This analysis of league position by minutes played is absolutely fascinating, looking at loads of clubs on the list, but the fact that we were in 2nd position, based on results after 60 minutes, shows how poorly we performed in the final 1/3rd of games (although I'd chuck some of Clarke's random substitutions into the mix for that stat too). It's very encouraging to see Hourihane pushing them on fitness from the start. Look what Val managed to achieve by having a squad that could maintain intensity levels throughout an entire game.
I think you could attribute some of that to Clarke too. He’d make a lot of unnecessary and often bemusing subs at around the 60min mark and we often lost our shape and organisation.
Cambridge United fans will be rueing the fact that games run for 90 minutes, not 10, which in their case is the difference between promotion and relegation.
There will be no cash signings unless we get big money in for any of our remaining saleable assets. Loans and free transfers until that happens.
Clarke's hand was forced to make "random" subs after 60 minutes, on reflection. The starting players were knackered by then, and we didn't hae the depth on the bench to cover, hence square pegs subs. Which says a lot about how astute Hourihane is. First thing he's done is fix the fitness
Football's a simple game. The basics often go overlooked, usually followed by unfortunate consequences
We were told the budget was competitive, what that looks like I've no idea, is it competitive on wages with no transfer cash, we'll have to wait and see. As we stand still need a pacey CB, a RB and 2 wide forward players/wingers.
