That's because, in some instances, it's true. We could have signed someone out of contract at the start of July last year when our first bid for DKD was rejected, and missed out on one of the best forwards in our division last season. We'll never know for certain whether that's true or not. But surely it's about quality over quantity? Again, the obvious example is Rotherham.
May be wrong, but just overheard a comment that there's two to be announced today (whilst at a work related event). Take it with a pinch of salt. May have dreamt it.
Because it’s true. It’s easy to sign a player that nobody wants. If there are multiple clubs making offers it tends to take longer.
People that want to get the best deal for themselves? We’d not have any players if that’s the kind of “character” we don’t want. This is the problem with people sharing stuff like what’s in this thread. If he joins the club now people are going to be immediately on his back and that will absolutely affect his performances if it happens.
I totally agree. However, this is the typical mindset of any mercenary footballer. Reason I don't listen to their cliched soundbites.
It might be true in the odd case but usually the better players get fixed up with a club pretty quickly.
I accept that it’s getting to the time now with pre-season in flow players are going to want to get in to have a good pre-season with their new teams but i genuinely can’t understand why any player who knows they’re going to be in demand would go to a team at the very start of the window unless it’s for ridiculous money that i wouldn’t want us to pay. Why would a player do that so early on and not wait to see what offers come in and start a bidding war? Makes no logical sense. It’s why the majority of deals happen right at the end of the window. Again, it’s a bit different in the summer window because lots of players are going to want to get in before the season starts but i think it still somewhat applies.
I was referring to free agents rather than players being bought from other clubs. If you're signing a free agent at the end of August you also have the added problem of fitness, as was the case with Humphrys last season.
Mainly, because whilst they may be farting about for the best deal, they may not be keeping themselves fit. So when they sign for a club late, they take (like in nearly every single year these days with us) until October/November to see any signs of life on the pitch. By then, we are miles of the pace. Just the main thing that the board/Sormaz and CH seem to want to address this year. Which is going well
I'm not doubting footballers want the best deal, but there comes a point, if indeed as mentioned by Luca it was a done deal and this is the 3rd time he's messed us about, that says enough about his character, once fair enough but three times!!
On the flipside, leave it too late and they might not have many offers on the table to choose from. It's a short career afterall, so gambling on a better offer coming in might not always be the wisest decision. The majority of free agents will have a club by the start of the season.
You’re talking about it from the perspective of a club which of course I agree with, I’m talking about from the perspective of the player himself. Makes no sense to sign early unless it’s for ridiculous money imo.
