I used to 'hate' (not actually, but in football terms) Wayne Rooney. But now, I feel a bit sorry him. Just grew up as a normal working class kid with an outrageous amount of footballing talent.

Gets the piss took out of him all the time just for how he speaks. Or about his weight. Ironically, by people who don't speak well themselves and/or are fatter than him:D

I think he's a **** manager and doesn't come across as a great pundit, but actually the substance of what he speaks often can be quite good. He will then follow it up with something daft, mind. But as I said, the amount of stick he gets is beyond mental sometimes :)

Everyone loves to hate a working class person with a regional accent. Whenever I've heard him speak in the studio during the football he has more insight then most of them,

Agreed he has failed as a manager and probably won’t get another gig now. But what did you hate about him as a player mate, he was a brilliant footballer.

Met him a few times through work, first at Everton, then Utd and a couple of times with England. Nice fella. Did a FIFA game shoot when they were mapping his movements for the console game. He went off afterwards and came back with a load of freebies for my kids - games, t-shirts and that.
Made a few daft decisions in his career, probably, but never anything but polite, quiet and engaging off camera - scared to death in front of it though. He'll get better the more shows he does and I'm looking forward to working with him next season.

He was a failure for in England in major tournaments. Absolute borefest when he was in the team. No coincidence England started doing well again after he retired from international duty.
2004 was the last competition we did well in. Took us 14 years to have that spark again and Rooney was THE wet blanket

Does he have £800k worth of licence fee insight , nothing against him as a player but it seems an extortionate amount for a pundit

To be fair when we had a midfield of Rooney, Dier and Alli that was an abomination.

New talents emerged along with Southgate gelling the team together which changed everything, apart from getting over the line and winning a trophy

I can't stand Rooney as a pundit/presenter but he at least has tried management and lives and breathes the game. Maybe he'll improve!

Hodgson was a bad England manager tbf. Great club level, but not international.

I doubt there’ll be many with better inside knowledge of the game. I think he needs a bit more experience in front of the camera that’s all.

Four hundred grand a year is a lot of money yeah - but he’s a younger and more credible name; they’re refreshing motd and presumably changing bits and pieces.

Nothing against this at all. I’ll be watching it. Though admittedly I sometimes record it and fast forward the punditry and just watch the highlights!

It wasn't really hate, hate mate. Its just buzz words thrown around when I was in my teenage years. Not liking man United because they were too good when I was growing up, and how many local people supported them etc. So it was more annoyance / jealousy growing up as you do haha. But obviously as I've grown, it's changed. I also severely underrated him but again, as I've aged, I've seen his brilliance, and now unfortunately because he retired relatively young and been a poor manager, I think a lot of other people underrate him now

Personally I think he's shité as a pundit, like most of them these days so he'll fit right in.
