Barnsley Football Club is delighted to announce the signing of David McGoldrick, subject to EFL registration.

The experienced striker arrives at Oakwell on a one-year deal after amassing over 600 appearances in English football, including promotion to the Premier League with Sheffield United.

The 37-year-old was most recently named in the Sky Bet League Two Team of the Year following an impressive campaign with Notts County, scoring 17 goals on route to the play-offs.

Starting out in the youth setup at Meadow Road, McGoldrick spent five years on the South coast with Southampton before permanently joining Nottingham Forest in 2009.

A five-year spell followed at the City Ground, before Reds legend Mick McCarthy secured the services of the Irishman for Ipswich Town in 2012. After making 159 appearances for the Tractor Boys, McGoldrick moved up to South Yorkshire in 2018 to represent Sheffield United, his 15 goals in the opening season helping fire the Blades to the Premier League.

A spell with Derby County followed, before returning to Notts County to help his hometown club on their return to the Football League in the 2023/24 season.

Named as the 2024/25 Fans’ and Players’ Player of the Season, as well Goal of the Season winner for the Magpies, our new man was also selected in the League Two Team of the Year last season.

Featuring 14 times for the Republic of Ireland national team and playing for the Rams in League One during 2022/23, McGoldrick links back up with Conor Hourihane and joins his Reds side ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.

Sporting Director, Mladen Sormaz, said: "We’re thrilled to welcome David to Barnsley. His experience, quality, and leadership both on and off the pitch will be invaluable to our squad. He’s had an incredible career at the highest levels of the game and still has so much to offer. His professionalism, winning mentality and goal threat will be a major asset as we push forward into the new season."

Head Coach, Conor Hourihane, added: "I’ve known Didzy for many years and his football intelligence, technical ability, and eye for goal speak for themselves. Beyond that, he’s a top character and someone I know our younger players will look up to. Bringing in someone of his calibre gives us a real boost and I’m looking forward to working closely with him this season."

Upon putting pen to paper, McGoldrick said, “I’m delighted to sign for Barnsley. It’s a massive Club with great history.

“I’ve played at Oakwell Stadium many times and always loved the passion from the fans and hope I can bring smiles and good times to the fans and Club.”

    Welcome to Oakwell, Didzy!

I wonder if we have signed him as 'bait' to attract a couple of other forwards, to whom he could be mentor. The young Samson Tovide would learn a lot from him, for sure. It might just tip the balance for the couple of forwards we need.
