Tovide wouldn’t be coming as just a squad player. He’s really highly rated and will cost a decent fee.
I get that and he won’t be but just cos of the fee. In terms of technical ability, we need someone who’s gonna hit the ground running. I can’t comment too much about the lad as he could be the best thing since sliced bread but his stats alongside his age don’t suggest that. I’m happy to be proved wrong though!
We can’t afford a 20 goal a season striker who’s in his prime so we have to sign a McGoldrick type player at the end of his career or a young up and coming player who will learn his trade with us and hopefully keep improving.
He’s only 21. Registered 12 goal contributions in 29 games last season. Played a thousand less minutes than McGoldrick for comparison. Plays any of the front three positions. Left foot, 6’2” and strong as an ox, no slouch. He’s exactly the sort of lad we should be after. His only issue? Had a lot of different injuries for a young lad. I assume that’s why certain Champ moves never completed last summer.
Fingers crossed the news of an accepted bid is true. Looks a really bright prospect that would learn so much from McGoldrick while he's here this season. Not getting too excited though given the source.
Pretty darned sure that the transfer fee for Tovide, the signing on fees for McGoldrick and both their wages combined will be more than those for DKD, who is, checks notes, a 20 goal a season striker in his prime. I'm not against McGoldrick and Tovide by the way but I do think that in general people are too easily suckered into the argument that we can't afford to buy one plug-and-play player and then we sign two lesser 'punt' players who cost at least as much in total and likely much more, particularly where the punt doesn't come off. Our hordes of sub-standard defenders are a prime example.
For those fans a bit younger than me (46), here's a profile of a few strikers we've signed in my time supporting Barnsley. In the interests of keeping it fairly contemporary, I'm not going to go back over 30 years. So, in no particular order: Paul Wilkinson. Signed aged 31. 170 league goals; over 100 of them in the top flight. Neil Shipperley. When signed: aged 25. 41 league goals, 190 league appearances, all but a small handful of them in the top flight. John Hendrie. Aged 32 when signed. Played his career predominately as a winger, but yet still had scored 101 league goals, over 200 top flight appearances. Mido. Signed aged 29, 23 premier league goals. The only player to have scored in the top flight in England, Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, France and Italy. Cauley Woodrow. Aged 23 when he signed his inital loan, widely talked about as a future England international, age group caps all the way up to under 21. 50 top flight appearances. Bruce Dyer. Britain's first million pound teenager. Signed aged 23. Already made 166 appearances scoring 43 goals, many of them in the top flight. 11 caps and 4 goals for England under 21s. Mike Sheron. Signed for £1.5m aged 27, he'd already made nearly 300 appearances and scored 80 league goals, the vast majority of them in the top flight. 16 caps and 4 goals for England under 21s. Ashley Ward. Signed aged 26, 93 Premier league appearances and 27 goals at the time. Sold for over £4m Jan Aage Fjortoft. Signed aged 30 from our hated local rivals. By that time he'd scored nearly 200 league goals, includong scoring 25 goals in all competitions for Pre.ier League Swindon, despite them in thay season being relegated woth tje lowest points total of all time. Understanding all this, you'll perhaps appreciate why we aren't waanking ourselves dry over 842 year old David McGoldrick and Samson fuuckking Tovide. I appreciate times have changed but the main change is that we have got loads shitter since these bellends arrived.
How many of those signed for us when we were mid-table in league 1? And I don't think anyone's 'waanking themselves dry' either, mate. Just passing comment on the players we're actually linked with. Fair play for knocking one out over Mido though.
Yes.. if he turns up here then we'll get behind him.. but his stats don't get you all-a-tingling inside..
But DKD is not a 20 goal a season striker though. For one he's not actually a striker, and for two he only has hit 20+ goals in his career once, and that was in L2. So that doesn't make him a guaranteed 20 goal a season man. Not saying he's not a fantastic player by the way, cos he is. But he is not a 20 goal a season man.
Fair point, forgot cups. But my point still stands. He was not a 20 goal a season man when we bought him, nor was he a guarantee to get 20 or near 20 last season. He'd done it once before in a league below. He's also not a guaranteed to do it again this season.
