Barnsley Live - dissapointing

Didn't go, but people put on loads of stuff to raise money for a service that is brilliant and one day we might all need (not getting into the politics of the fact it should be paid for from central gov). So I've donated.

 

I’m just thinking, wouldn’t it make more sense to chuck 10p extra (off the top of my head) on each drink next year and all pubs agree to give that to the charity? Cuts out the need for charity folk to go out with begging buckets.

 

The Chronicle? Pfft, they hardly mention the event, never mind any charities it supports.

 

They do like wrapping their paper in right wing advertising though.

Its disgusting the amount they raised compared to how many people actually turn up on the day. Nobody would notice an extra 10p per drink.

 

Majority of the bars have made a killing out the day for the last few years. They should be making a decent contribution IMO. Yes they let the bands etc play for free but its not really costing them much is it? Nothing compared to what they make.

 

Surely it's the responsibility of the people collecting the money to work around that though? Everyone knows that not many people carry cash these days. I didn't go so maybe they did try and work around it somewhat, but it seems extremely silly to organise an event around people dropping cash in a bucket these days.

It's just a lot easier for most people to use their card or apple pay for everything these days, simple as that.

 

Reight before this post decends into a left wing lynch mob lets put a few things reight.

The pubs and bars pay a lot to host Barnsley Live. Without them there would be no Barnsley Live. They stump up money and take a risk, there's no guarantees they'll make big profits. We've had quieter years, very wet years but the last two have been glorious weather so it's helped. Even the pubs who don't have live music on often contribute. There's 30 soundmen and 30 lots sound equipment to pay for and the pubs pay for this. Asking them to start messing about with their tills, taxes and accountancy stuff would be a nightmare and unnecessary.

All we ask if for the general public to chuck a few quid in the large amount of collection tins, buckets etc or to use the QR code and donate. The link to the donation page has been circulating for ages. I've been posting about it on Eyup & Down, one of the posts hit 122k views.

I'm not sure a free event with close to zero pound budget for advertising can do much more to push the charity side of the event. There's so much info to get out to the public on the run up to the day, if Barnsley Live only posted about the main charity folks would complain at that.

There were collection tins on every bar, an army of volunteers going around the venues all day, it had been all over social media, it was on most of band line ups, mentioned in the local media etc etc etc. I'm not sure how someone attending Barnsley Live could not have been aware of the main sponsor or how to do

 

I don't know what each bar takes during the day, but I know those bars aren't serving that much product on any other day throughout the year. I reckon I had seven drinks, maybe eight (was there from 2pm until midnight). I drunk a few waters too. Another 70p/80p wouldn't have stopped me attending. And every bar I went in was proper heaving.

When launching/announcing next year, kick it off by announcing the charity partner front and centre. And make it clear that 10p from each drink sold will go to the charity. Get the food vendors on board too. Maybe 10p is too much? Just a penny would still pull in more than the grand total of donations this year.

Might be a bad idea, I dunno. I've got loads more.

 

Can't believe that. Pi$$ poor. I was there on the day. Fantastic time with the kids who came up (again) from that there London for the event. They love it. Bought a programme and a T shirt and made (admittedly) a small donation on top. Have just been on the site and made a more substantial offering. Would be good to get a regular update on how this 'new' appeal is doing.

Would be terrible if this event stopped. It is a big part of why Barnsley is getting so much national and regional focus and attention as a town 'on the up'. Other than the crap football team obviously.

The idea of sticking a few pence on each drink was just that, an idea to try and help. Not a criticism in any way. I've seen nothing but first rate reviews of Barnsley Live and personally, I really enjoyed it (was in the car park next to Eadens for a long spell and it was heartwarming to see the town rammed in the sunshine) and I appreciate the efforts of everyone involved in making it the success that it is. I don't know how many folk attended, but the fundraising total definitely feels way off. You could barely breathe at the bar in most spots, such was the turnout.

But yeah. Just throwing ideas out there, trying to help.

Asking 40 plus venues to change their pricing and mess about with adding bits on and then collecting the money isnt going to happen. We are all just volunteers, this would be a logistical nightmare.

Much simpler would be if folks made a bit of an effort and just donated a few quid. Problem solved.

My apologies. Was just a suggestion off the top of my head. Wasn't a criticism and as I say, I was there and loved the event, appreciated the efforts of all involved and happily donated to a charity close to my heart.

I hope folk make more of an effort next year. Not sure how you get involved, but I'd be happy to if possible. Even bucket shaking. So long as I can still be left wing.

 

My son’s band was the first one on in the Soho Social and they mentioned the charity and reminded everyone to donate, but they were the only band I saw that did this.

 

I think it's nice for someone to start their message with "I'm a moron so you can ignore everything else I say" tbh. Saves a lot of time.

Nice to know I can unfollow Eyup and Down, too.
