Sounds like we're after signing a team full of wingers, are we relying on own goals as an end product?
In the clubs defence we have only lost Humphrys so far.Which is no big loss. We still have our better players to start. Plus McGoldrick who will score goals at this level. Im optimistic with our current squad ,especially if we can replace O keefe with a proper defender.
Vickers played the second half as Brighton beat Stoke yesterday in Spain. He even registered an assist, from the left wing.
As it stands Hourihane has a nice problem up front. DKD, Mcgoldrick and Cleary. All three won't play.
We’ve only signed Cleary. Jalo is injured, leaving Farrugia and Cleary as the only natural wingers. We need wingers if we’re playing 4-3-3.
And I wouldn't even call Farrugia a natural winger either. Pretty sure he was signed as a wing back and that's where he's spent most of his career.
I'll ask it in a different way. Have we done early business ? Have we not signed younger players ? Do we look like a team that will be up there challenging ? Does our business so far look like we've a competitive budget?
This is why I wish we'd go back to how it used to be, nobody from the club saying anything during the summer. You've literally hung onto every word Mladen said, taken it literally and now you're using it as a way to criticise the club. Obviously he said what he said with the greatest will in the world, but in reality, it doesn't always work like that. We've no idea how many players we've spoken to, or how far down the list of targets we are, or whether we're still interested in our number 1 target. Both Humphrys and DKD were rumoured as targets I think as early as June last season, though neither signed before the end of August. McGoldrick said he had contact from Conor just after the season finished, but it was 2 months later when he finally signed. In reality, clubs hold little of the power in these scenarios (see Josh Koroma), particularly if you don't have a lot of money. Obviously, it's Mladen's fault for trying to say the right things.
The amount of players we've spoken to will obviously never be known but they'll be no time for hard luck stories when the season kicks off. What is relevant though is providing the head coach with tools to do a job, if anybodys boss said we are going to do xyz publicly but delivered something opposite but expected the same objectives then people would have reason for concern wouldn't they? I haven't hung onto anything, a better term for it is accountability, what you are eluding to then? That what Mladen said at the time wasn't actually the reality and he just decided to spin things? It's either failure thus far or what he said was a load of b*****ks, which one is it?
Of course it was spin, that's what football is. He was hardly going to come out and say, 'well, it's difficult getting players through the door, hopefully we'll have some before the start of the season'. Nobody wants to hear that. As I say, I'd prefer they don't say anything, because that becomes the barometer. Our transfer business is far from done, both in and out. Maybe wait until September to judge whether Hourihane has the tools for the job. Whilst we haven't done loads of business, 3 of the 4 signings definitely strengthen us in my opinion (I know little about Ogbeta), though at the minute, we've not lost anyone other than maybe Humphry's who weakens us. It's frustrating that it's not all been done before the season starts (which is still another fortnight away), but in reality, there won't be a single club who has all of their business done before the start of the season.
Its like baking a cake. Until its out of the oven and you have tasted it you wont know how successful you have been. At the moment we are still sourcing the ingredients and as such there is nothing to taste.
