Excuse the randomness. We've got some great statues in town, and the miners child has been put back on Midland Street. But it's just struck me, that we don't have Brian Glover (Would go well next to the Kez statue) or Harry Worth. I really think Harry Worth is a forgotten son of Barnsley, and it would be a really nice for us to have a statue of him (maybe lifting his leg and arm in a shop window*). Thoughts? I believe he had a blue plaque but that's about it. I did think about old Arthur Scargill^ and even Geoffrey Boycott, but those two individuals may split opinion (even if one day we'll all look back and say the guy was right all along). Then there's Parkinson? Ian McMillan, Sean Dooley and Katherine Kelly (all too young?) * Some people have catchphrases, Harry had a signature move ** I know I mentioned Arthur, please lets not go political on this thread.
Ian McMillan was in my year at Wath Grammar School, but he wasn't in my group of mates and I honestly have no memory of him whatsoever. I'd still have a pint with him though.
Always wondered why he always gets mentioned, what's his Barnsley connection? We do try and nick famous people and claim them as our own
There are plenty of famous people from town, and I think the club should do Mick M and Norman (as well as the greats .. Danny Wilson, Ronnie Glavin, Neil Redfearn, Martin Bullock etc). However, in this instance, I just feel Harry is a little forgotten.
Yea, I wondered about that. I knew he was from Fitzwilliam, but Barnsley always seems to get the credit. I thought (But am probably wrong), that Fitzwilliam fell under Pontefract. Another one we've claim is stand up comedian Daniel Kitson, but he's from Denby Dale (which I'd have said just comes under Huddersfield).
Maybe gets linked because he played cricket for Barnsley and I am sure he lived at Woolley village at some stage.
You missed out then. He was in my class/form all the way through. He became the person he is by knowing me ! He was in Rome whereas I was in Carthage.
The coal boy is a total embarrassment, if they wanted to recognise mining the statue at South Kirkby looks impressive not some gormless carton. Character caricature.
Can not remember her name, the world-renowned Egyptologist from Barnsley. Please help, it's driving me mad.
I was talking to Ashley Jackson the other day in his shop; he got a bit narked when I told him I'd only come in for a natter, not to buy owt.
I was in Athens, so no contact there either. I was in the science forms after the 2nd year and I think you two must have been arty farties I'm guessing that you both stayed on for 6th form. We must have crossed paths then, though I honestly can't remember him but I do remember you. At school I used to hang around with the likes of Steve Stewardson, Gordon Seward and the sadly departed Phil Porter.
I guess being big friends with Dickie and Parkinson kind of gives that impression? Ackworth CC still has Geoff Boycott gates. His house was flattened quite a few years ago in Fitzy iirc.
Brian Blessed is another, last time l looked Mexborough was nowt to do with Barnsley. And whilst we're on one, the numerous Chronicle stories where it starts with The Barnsley boxer, from Brampton... The Barnsley singer from Wath, stop reporting Rotherham news - those places are not Barnsley.
