This going down lark is the latest modern scourge in the game. Absolutely does my head in. It happens every game now, several times a game.

Their fans saying it should have been a straight red card for the penalty. From my view in the east stand lower it looked like it was a clumsy coming together

Tbf watching it back, I can see their point. Would be plenty of ours saying the same had it been the other way. If he’s given it for going in with the elbow, it’s strange to see how he’s not sent him.

I notice the Wednesday keeper collected the ball at one point, looked around, saw they were all marked and just sat on the floor and starting massaging his thigh. Absolute joke really, if they’re going to enforce this maximum time keeper holds the ball they’re going to have to do something about it. 9 minutes injury time every game now.

To be fair to McGoldrick, he's using his arms for leverage and is watching the ball. I don't think he's aware their player is behind him. He probably doesn't need to do it as the ball is clearly going over his head. He doesn't elbow him as such, though it is that part of his body which connects. But there's absolutely no intent, so for me, I think it's difficult to argue it's violent conduct. He could maybe have booked him, but as I say, I think it's clumsy rather than dirty.

Yeah and then changed the taker.. Think Murphy was hoping for 'straight down the middle' shot.
A lot on here have been blowing smoke up Murfs behind.. Got a head full of broken biscuits sometimes. Not made my mind up if he's an improvement on last season 5 yet..

Can’t imagine it happens often that a player goes straight down the middle outside of penalty shootouts. Bit annoying that he didn’t even attempt a dive, I don’t mind if they go the wrong way but not to even attempt it is worse in my book.

    https://theanalyst.com/articles/why-more-premier-league-goalkeepers-should-stand-still-at-penalties

Across those two seasons, 21.2% of penalties (35 of 165) have been hit down the middle. So, this leads us to the question: why don’t more goalkeepers stand still at penalties?

    Don't think so. If it's worse than Burton's, I won't be having a look.

Agree. Hopefully we can pay a few senior players the going rate for League 1, and younger players a decent rate so they’re happy to get in the team and get some experience. If a Championship club offers the right fee for any player they will leave. If we can develop a young lad like Jon Bland he could be worth £££s in a couple of years.

Last penalty Beesley scored (for Blackpool against Bolton in 2023/2024) he put it down the middle. Maybe that’s the reasoning.

To be fair it was an excellent penalty on Saturday. No guarantee of saving it even if he'd guessed correctly.
