Whilst we were enjoying a thrilling come from behind victory against Burton an absolute travesty was happening in London. 466 people were arrested for peacefully protesting against genocide & supporting the non-violent Palestine Action. As you can see in the picture these aren’t your typical criminals. Included amongst them was an 81 year old woman with Parkinson’s. Every single MP including our own Jarvis & Peacock that voted for the motion to categorise Palestine Action on the same level as ISIS should be ashamed of themselves. What a waste of vital resources. Surely even people on the right don’t think these are the type of people our police should be wasting their time dealing with? A ridiculous situation that was entirely predictable.
Need to be careful what you write as any post that implies support for Palestine Action is now a criminal offence. It doesn’t matter whether you think they shouldn’t be compared to Hamas or the IRA the government has decreed them terrorists and you can’t challenge it. Think about that for a moment there is no legal way to protest about this governments decision some people might think that none violent acts of sabotage to draw attention to actual genicide is an acceptable form of action the Labour government using Tory laws disagrees and equates it to those who target innocent civilians. Unless of course they are the Israeli government who clearly are not terrorists in any way it makes me ashamed to be British. We seem to be sliding into fascism whether you look to Tory Labour or Reform ltd. Too depressed for words
The direction this country is going in is very concerning' far too many non political people with a very unhealthy influence within westminster.
Agree with a lot of that but Palestine Action are a banned group and police made it clear that arrests would be made if people turned up.
George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four happening in real life. https://news.sky.com/story/more-tha...-with-about-a-half-aged-60-and-above-13409747
It’s appalling to see peaceful protesters — people speaking out against mass atrocities — being arrested, while those in power spew rhetoric straight out of the Farage-Trump playbook. It’s authoritarian theatre dressed up as “law and order,” and it’s as repulsive as it is dangerous. The language alone is poisonous — calculated to dehumanise and divide — shameful ba**ards.
That’s my point. They shouldn’t be banned. It’s ludicrous that saying you support Palestine Action is treated the same as if you say you support ISIS.
Definitely. I wouldn’t dream of saying I supported them. I’ve got too much to lose. I have a huge amount of respect for people that are willing to risk time in prison to support what they believe in.
Any chance Labour might have had of getting me to ever vote for them again has been thoroughly and permanently destroyed in the last couple of months.
Whatever you think about Palestine Action as a group, the people supporting their case are clearly not terrorists. Whoever was behind proscribing them at this stage clearly hasn't thought it through.
All who were arrested were released without charge, by all accounts. It’s just theatre, as I said. Just as the idiotic video Starmer put on social media the other day was, as though he was f***** Robocop. “When I said you’d be deported, I meant it.” Or Cooper describing it as “cleaning up our streets” when referencing illegal immigrants being found to work for fast food companies. They’re trying to out fascist the fascists. And they’ll be obliterated in the next general election. By the actual far right and the left wing. Labour will be as irrelevant as the Tories in four years.
I’ve said it before, but to repeat, this country seems intent on polarising people to extremes. The atrocity in Gaza is terrible and I can’t imagine anyone supporting genocide. Supporters of Palestine are labelled left / terrorists etc etc. Then there are people who don’t feel safe in their towns, people protest and get labelled right wing activists. Both groups contain people, OAP’s with no criminal history but depending what you read or believe they are extremists. I want peace. I think the labour government have been complicit in amplifying these issues rather than solving them. I have no faith in this modern labour government and fear the alternatives. Sad times.
What's happening is unquestionably genocide. But it's perfectly possible (and lawful) to protest in support of Palestinians without supporting Palestine Action Group, who rightly or wrongly have been proscribed.
There are plenty of other ways to effectively protest that do not involve targeting three national defence infrastructure assets. You get into dangerous territory when you start deciding which causes it is and is not reasonable to endanger national security for. For those that might think Brize Norton was only paint are completely missing the point.
Big brother is certainly watching. Long before the internet and mobile phones I lived a happy life not knowing what was going on in the world. And these people with mobile phones just encourage the actors to play up even further. For me I would ban these idiots who waste police time. Auditors, digital creators, pain in ar.e more like it
Keir Starmer spent some of his early career defending people just like those in Palestine Action who commited the grievous crime of painting a plane. As usual he stands for absolutely everything and nothing all at the same time. It's surprising to see the media fail to jump on Labour for air base security being so poor that they were allowed to get on to it, never mind spraying the plane. You'd have thought that if these part timers can do it, so could the Russians or any one else really wanting to cause damage. A news story? Yvette Cooper should be carrying the can. Instead she's targeted a bunch of peaceniks whilst Labour continues to tacitly support Israel and fail to take any meaningful action because they're too frightened of Trump and Netenyahu. Cooper was also right behind invading Iraq so she had a history of having **** all judgment.
I think the issue is that we, as the general public, don't know what the true reason is for classifying this group as a terrorist organisation. I would suspect there is a much bigger reason than spray painting a plane. I believe the people are right to protest the issues in Gaza and dont need to blindly associate with Palestine Action while still supporting Palestinian people. But there is a reason for this terrorist classification that we may not know the reason for, for many years, if at all.
Apparently 100 of those detained were in their 70s and 15 were in their 80s. Sir Jonathon Porritt, 75, a former government adviser and Chris Romberg, 75, a former British army officer colonel and military attache at UK embassies in Egypt and Jordan, and the son of a Holocaust survivor. Another included a retired member of the clergy. They'll have to backtrack on this and rightly so.
