Ok yeah, I've just looked at my watch, and I think it's time for some more Tykes memories. The 'Millennium' season ehh, with Dave Bassett, and our first ever day out at Wembley. Following on from the disappointing season with John Hendrie, I thought at the time, that we'd made a great choice there with Bassett.
Bassett was/is annoying of course, and he was very aggressively up and at em etc!. But he really was effective, and I think it was just what we needed, at that time. We were still hoping to get back up to the Prem in those days, and I think Dave gave us a brilliant season.
I somewhat think that it’s a similar situation now with CH, I think we’ll score a bucket loads of goals and we’ll get the fans entertained this season which has been lacking for a few year tbh
I’ll never forgive Basset for letting Arjan de Zeeuw walk out or the club without even offering him a contract. Got to rank as one of the biggest cockups ever
Yeah JD, and it certainly has been lacking lol. But hey that was one of the season's where I really looked forward to every game, with confidence .
I was never a fan of Bassett although the football was entertaining.I still believe we should have gone up automaticly but towards the seasons end it became more about him and not so much the team.It became almost as though Dave thought going up at Wembley would have gave him more kudos and look at me look what I've done.
Remember when we battered Blackburn at home, and the flop Ashley Ward was with them then lol. And we beat Man City as well at home, and we had a really good loan player then, John Curtis.
Shipperley, Sheron, Dyer and Hristov the forward options, with Hignett, Barnard, Eaden, Van der Laan, Thomas and Tinkler behind. The defending was a bit kamikaze for my liking. Morgan was in good nick but neither Chettle or Tuttle were in their prime. Don’t get me started on Brown. I did rate Miller in goal though. Crazy season. Concede six one game, score six the next. Big wins against good sides. Strange defeats against poor teams. The Hignett perfect hat-trick game stands out. As does a Stockport trip. Plus the obvious - Birmingham away in the playoffs. Shame it ended how it did at Wembley, but much like Swansea 20 years later, Ipswich had our number that year.
Yeah his contract was up but he wasn’t offered the option of a new one Ended up at Wigan where where he is remembered with the same esteem that we have for Ronnie
And heres the dreaded game and eventual result, at Wembley. But this doesn't ruin it for me, what a great season it was. And hey, Craig Hignett, what a quality player he was!.
I would say Hignett’s season that season was the best individual performance I’ve seen from any player over the 46 plus games.
Ipswich did indeed have our number that year. Went to every game against them and never liked playing them since. I had a friend very into spread betting which was all the rage then. I never understood it but after a few jars the night before the away game at Portman road he persuaded us to go all in. At 6-0 down we were facing a big loss but apparently the one goal we scored brought it back to acceptable levels. We celebrated that goal as if we'd won the cup. Got some funny looks from those around us
I, and tots of others are so lucky to have been able to visit Wembley or Wembley substitute grounds every time we've played there, and all in a 20 odd year period, that's some doing. vs Ipswich, last club side to play at Wembley vs Swansea (lucky to see us at the Millennium) vs Cardiff in the cup (OK, that should have been at Liverpool or Old Trafford really) vs Oxford in the Freight Rover cup vs Spurs in the League Cup (Not at real Wembley match but still at Wembley) vs Millwall in the playoffs vs some **** side That's amazing, it really is Oakwell South
Brilliant season in terms of attacking football - trouble is we had a defence that could quite easily concede a few as well. Don't think we'll see an attacking line up like that one for a very long time
also a huge favourite at Portsmouth too where he got them promoted and then won player of the year when they were in the PL. a legend at three clubs. Remarkable player and career
Remember a 3-3 draw at Sheff Utd towards the end of the season that was two points tossed away. Absolutely played them off the park and led 3 times getting pegged back every time. Equaliser came in injury time after a mix up between Curtis and Miller in goal. Hignett was just unplayable that season.
Not sure it was all just up and at 'em. I was dreading it under him because of how his previous teams had played, but it turned into one of the most entertaining seasons I remember. He had some bloody good players at his disposal, mind.
I’d forgotten about that game. Yes Hignett was sensational in that match but wasn’t it him who, with the score at 3-2 got a forward pass and instead of taking it in the corner to run down the clock went for a fourth? United got possession and went straight up and got that equaliser. I remember it as a night game but I could be wrong about that.
