VAR is ruining the game

Should be for offside and red cards. Theu are now re reffin the game. Looking at ways to disallow every goal.

Utterly mental. An incredible strike and ruled out by VAR and the ref because Guehi was “within a metre of the Chelsea wall”. I’ve no idea what the rules are anymore.

 

If your on about the palace free kick it looked like a well worked foul to me guahi pushes the lad out of the way and eze strikes it where he was stood.

 

I don't agree.He shoved him out of the way to allow enough space for the ball to be hammered straight into the net.It looked like it was a planned move.Not taking anything away from the strike though cos that was hit true and hard.

 

That isn’t why it was ruled out. You are allowed to use your shoulder to push against an opponent. For now at least. I’m sure they’ll ban that soon too.

It was because he was within a metre of a “formed wall of at least three players”. Again, completely new one on me.

Yes, shoulder-to-shoulder challenges are still allowed in football, but they must be fair and legitimate according to football rules. This means the contact must be shoulder to shoulder, within playing distance of the ball, and without excessive force or dangerous play. The challenge should be an attempt to get the ball, not just to impede the opponent. He wasn't within playing distance of the ball.

 

For the third time - that isn’t why the goal was ruled out. That wasn’t an offence. He was merely stronger than Caicedo (who didn’t complain). I’m sure it’ll be an offence one day, but not today.

 

Sorry yes you are right,I misread the rule of three or more players in the defensive wall equals opposing players to be a minimum of a metre away.

Its getting to the stage where watching live play is obsolete. Even today we struggle to know what offences are given for, whats onside, offside etc. its becoming essential to have commentary and now referee announcements. Got me thinking how good football would be if it worked similar to the 60’s and 70’s rules. A few tweaks and it would be a great watch.

 

Rules are a mockery - you can drag the shirt off a players back these days in the area and it’s not even a foul.

 

New rules that have come in since I started watching football that have actually benefitted the game:

1 - 3 points for a win, rather than 2
2 - the back pass rule
3 - er…I guess making the keeper release the ball from his hands within 8 seconds could be good, but every ref will deal with this slightly differently. And 40 yard screamers that were disallowed cos someone nowhere near the flight of the ball was offside was stupid, so that has stopped, but you can’t really credit the changes to the offside rule because they change it so often I’m never sure what the rules are anymore. There must be a 3rd good new rule though…but I can’t think of one.

 

I watched that go in, turned the TV off & went out for dinner. I got there & was talking football with my father in law & mentioned Eze had scored a beauty & he says he can’t have it’s 0-0. Cheers VAR, made me look stupid

 

Offside was brought in to stop "Goal hangers" ie players staying at or on the goal line. The old offside rule only applied in the attacking half of the pitch and resulted in the "Arsenal offside trap" on the halfway line. The rule was changed to stop this. I think we should go back to the old offside rule but only apply it in the attacking third of the pitch. This would stop the "Arsenal offside trap" because it would be just outside the penalty area and thus a much more dangerous tactic. Side benefits would include;

1) spreading the play in the centre of the pitch,
2) give the linesman a smaller area to watch, thus allowing him to be in-line more often - the main reason they get it wrong
3) stop the absurd situation we get now where a player clearly offside is allowed to run after the ball forcing a goalkeeper to sprint off his line and risk injury, only for the flag to then go up

I think this should be trialed in lower leagues to see if it would work.

I don't know why they didn't just do this instead of the ridiculous rule they have now. I wonder if they did do a trial of something like this?

So now we had the ref in the Man United v Arsenal match drawing a line at the end of the wall and another a metre away from the wall for the attacking players to stand behind, as well as the line for the ball and the line for the wall. I understand it's a rule, and why it's a rule, but good grief, is this going to be a thing now?
