Afternoon All, I am going to begin painting our gable wall which hasn’t previously been painted. The wall is pebble dashed and my question is, do I need to use some kind of stabilising solution first? or will it be ok to paint straight on to it (with Sandtex)? Any advice greatly appreciated.TIA

I'd read the paint manufacturers instructions...if it says ' use a primer', I'd do as they say, the alternative is to try a test area and see how it goes.

Hi mate, I’m a self employed deccy,

Should only need stabilizing if current paint is loose, ie flaking or powdery.

If there is any mould or lichen etc, fungicidal wash or power wash.

If you’re going with Sandtex, use the trade stuff, thin your first coat very slightly and bash on!

As a rule of thumb, always good to have a good read of the tin for the manufacturers recommendations.

Apologies - just noticed it’s unpainted - deffo see what manufacturer recommends.

Wouldn’t say the surface is dry or powdery. We’re quite fortunate that it’s not exposed to the elements where our neighbours is. I suspect some of the pebble dashed may fall off during the process, but think I’m just gonna slap some on there tbh :D

This is from the link I posted. I’m not sure new pebble dash is so much porous as just a bugger to paint.

Rather than going down the ‘belt and braces’ route of treating it all with the stabilising primer, which could well be overkill. I suggest painting a small section with a thin coat of masonry paint first.

If the stabilising primer was tintable to the same colour of the finish, you could probably get away with a coat of each, as you will have to apply two coats for opacity.

    PREPARATION

New surfaces All surfaces must be sound, suitably dry and free from anything that will interfere with the adhesion of the materials to be applied. Surfaces with suction (porous surfaces) should
be treated with an application of Sandtex Trade Stabilising Solution.

I once pebble dashed the bathroom wall and beige carpet when I fainted on the toilet.

No. Low proteins in my blood apparently. Wasn't feeling too clever before I needed the toilet. Next thing I knew my mum was running me a bath.

Cant get any better than Sandtex for Pebble dash covering, Masonary of course, but put it on amply an you'll get the result you want, dont dab it on, good luck an if yer not using scaffolding be careful.

I thought this was a question for George Spicer, as i understand he and Giorgio often enjoy creating their own watercolours in the scenic countryside.
