And Reform are leading in the polls. Led by the bloke who championed Brexit. Which has exacerbated the asylum issue. You couldn’t make it up. It’s literally turkeys voting for Christmas.
Reminds me of a piece i found in The Times from around 1860 – a time when most folk could neither read or write. The Times was alarmed at proposals for educating the working classes because they would come to discover the true plight they were in.
Maybe, but I see it more as the tanks, missiles, drones and troops being more responsible for the conflict than the flag.
If the flag flying over Ukraine were Russian, Putin would have no need to commission ranks, drones and troops to attack it. This is Putin's war. Empire rebuilding.
I find it all utterly dismaying tbh. It's distinctly possible that we reach a point in the next few years where these views represent the majority. The 'opposition' has sleepwalked into this IMO, by refusing to take the rise of the right seriously. The massive irony is, the 'if you don't like it, leave' crowd also made it virtually impossible to do just that. As a parent of an 11-year old lad, it worries me massively what England could become over the next 30 years.
I remember working in Scotland many years ago and saw a lot of people with the Scottish flag car sticker, obviously patriotism promoted by the press. The sticker had the text 'I'm a real Scot' across it. I wondered how many fake ones exist ;-)
Are the people who are planting these flags illegally on our lamp posts, wearing the Farage football shirt, because only a lowlife would buy a Farage football shirt, and only a lowlife would put a flag on a lamp post. Just imagine if one of these flags became detached and landed on a car windscreen while at speed.
thats the thing though, it could go far left or far right. The fact is nothing is been done about it. A lot of this flag thing stems from the school girl who was singled out and it’s a show of unity and to show that showing your British. The problem now is that if you show a flag you’re a radical racist and following Farage. It’s not just showing a flag it’s people saying enough is enough and the government needs to sort it out now. Not everyone showing a flag is coming out with pitch forks but even now people will never have the same view that’s why we have a democracy. Let’s liken it to football, you will always have a section of idiots at every club, does that mean all the fan base is the same.
This isn't about people displaying flags at their homes. This is about small groups putting out 1000s of them on public property. Bear in mind the schoolgirl wore a union flag dress and her local community decided to display a few union flags in support. Now, the bulk of the flags being blanketed all over everything by the "patriotic men" (their words on the FB group) are English flags.
Ask yourself why now? Is it simply because it’s a Labour Govt. Why didn’t the Tory controlled council that won the recent court case against the hotel rooming Asylum seekers, previously take a Tory govt to court, Afterall, it would’ve been them that issued the contract? When interviewed the leader of the council said Starmer had failed in his promise to stop hotels giving refuge. When the interviewer said his pledge was to stop it by the end of their term in office, to which the councillor replied, ‘not good enough’ So Labour haven’t turned things around in their first 12 months-ish in office and they are judged on that then? No I’m not happy with everything this govt has or hasn’t done, but it’s like the last 14 years never happened or has conveniently been forgotten about. The people that are pandering to Farage’s rabble rousing is ludicrous, This country needs to be very careful indeed.
that’s my point though because the country has had enough everybody who supports them is racist. Yes they are some far left nuts that support them but not everyone is the same.
Had enough of what? Why don’t they ask why the country really is in a state, what are the ‘true causes’ Why does someone like Farage take interest in those he feels are beneath him, his lack of presence as a Euro MP, and by the sounds of it, he’s never in his constituency office. Why does he constantly beat the anti-immigration drum and keep other policies on the hush, hush. Why is he always in the USA pandering to the corporates who are salivating over the prospect of flooding the UK with private medical insurance etc, etc.
You are saying the small groups of men blanketing English flags over everything without permission represent the masses? This has nothing to do with the schoolgirl or the random individuals who display flags at their homes. This is a small targeted group, mostly wishing to remain anonymous and mostly working at night, putting out thousands of English flags on public property without permission and contrary to the law. This does not demonstrate the country has had enough of anything.
Yes, well, this is my point patriotism isn't a disorder or some low-IQ trait, its perfectly normal. Why support Barnsley? Why support Yorkshire? There's nothing intrinsically better about Yorkshire then Lancashire, yet here we are, singing "We love you Barnsley" at the footy and "yorkshire, yorkshire" at the cricket, and the footy.
Exactly this. This has been hijacked by the mindless far right as an excuse to intimidate and to support the agenda of the Fagash Furhrer and his ilk.
The irony is the tribalism in league football doesn't foster national patriotism. It pits rivalries, it's adversarial, attacks points of difference as basic as the colour of a shirt. That's why I don't understand national patriotism. Belonging isn't patriotism. You could certainly find large numbers of trans, ethnic minorities, religious minorities, and many more groups who were born in the UK and certainly don't feel they belong at a national level. Yet locally, in bubbles, in peer groups, in certain communities, they can be themselves and hopefully thrive. I'd argue that respect, patience, understanding... Are all more valuable than what is dubbed patriotism under the banner of a nation.
