Barnsley Football Club are pleased to announce the signing of defender Jake Rooney from Derby County on a season-long loan, subject to clearance.

Working with our Head Coach Conor Hourihane at Pride Park with the Rams, Rooney has Championship and League One experience and can operate at centre-back or on the right side of defence.

Featuring twice for Derby this campaign so far, Rooney arrives to provide further depth to our defensive options for the 2025/26 season.

Sporting Director Mladen Sormaz commented on the addition, “We’re very pleased to bring Jake to Oakwell for the season.

“His versatility across central defence and right back makes him a strong addition to the squad.

“To date in his career Jake has shown real resilience and professionalism, and we believe this loan is the right environment for him to continue his development while contributing to our ambitions this year.”

Head Coach Conor Hourihane added, “Jake is a fantastic addition to our squad. He’s young, hungry, and has already shown maturity beyond his years at Derby. His ability to play across the backline gives us extra options, and we’re excited to see what he can bring to our team this season.”

    Welcome to Oakwell, Jake.

According to Soccerbase his last league appearance was two years ago tomorrow when he went off injured after 14 minutes away at Bolton

True. But he’s played 2 full games this season in the league cup and been on the bench in league games for them, so I expect he’d have an OK level of fitness.

A few of us wrote at the start of the season that some cheap punts would be the way forward..this looks like one ov em. If it works out like the rest it'll be a bargain..

Might not be be as much of a punt as you think with Conor already knowing him personally?

According to Derby Jake was fully fit midway through last season and played for the under 21's while intergrating back into the first team squad.I suppose if Derby were doing well with a settled team it would have been hard for him to get straight back into the team a bit like Russell here at the moment.
    His time will come.
