I think it’s more about “the first” to do anything always inspires others, and if you can relate the person who has done it whether that’s by sex, race, religion, where you’re from either nationally or locally, it inspires you to try to follow in their footsteps.
From a religious standpoint, it has no relevance. And to you, me, and I'd imagine to everyone else on this forum (apologies to any Muslims we have on here), from a cultural perspective, it doesn't either. It might make a difference to Muslim football fans though, particularly the next generation of young footballers who see people of their religion held in high regard as idols. Another example. John Stones being a Barnsley lad, playing for England has no relevance whatsoever to 99.99% of the population of England. However, it's rightly celebrated by our club, our fans and our town folk as an incredible achievement. Obviously he's not the first, but he's the first for a generation or 2. He's a role model for young footballers from the town, and a example of how, if you apply yourself right, you can do the same. I understand there's a difference between race and religion, but I don't think that matters in this context.
So he's of the Muslim faith, shock horror, whatever next What's it matter what religion he or anybody else is. No doubt pointed out to gain effect in today's hostile climate that we find ourselves in It doesn't mean he's a practicing Muslim though does it ,and if he is, so what's the problem. Religious practices/ choice are down to the individual and are personal So why the need to point it out You dont hear the broadcasters, drawing references to the others who are possibly Church of England Catholic Methodists etc who some no doubt haven't attended a religious service for years. Personally I can't see why the need to publish what creed or colour or religious beliefs have to do with it. He's sworn is allegiance to the England team like many have done before, who can qualify for more than one nation. So shame on the broadcasters for doing so, in my opinion.
Never said that, but having a role model that you can relate to is massive in terms of shaping the hobbies of young people
