Apologies for the irrelevant to football (and Rugby) post, but I just wanted to share a few images from South Africa. Fulfilling a bit of a lifetime dream at the moment at Amakhala Game Reserve, also been in Victoria Falls and Cape Town, and can't quite believe our luck with the wildlife sightings so far. There's smoke coming out of my camera at the moment it's constantly in use. One of the most beautiful countries I've ever visited.
Glad you're enjoying it. South Africa is one of the most amazing countries I've ever been to. Cape Town was fantastic. The safari part I wasn't particularly looking forward to but loved. Have a great time.
I went to Cape Town about 20 years ago. Not only was it stunningly beautiful, the exchange rate was mind blowing. You couldn’t give money away. Took the missus and her parents out to one of the best restaurants, three course meal for the four of us, steaks the size of half a cow (they would ask you whether you wanted a man’s steak or a woman’s steak, the latter being around 6 times the size of a restaurant steak in the UK, although this restaurant I am talking about you went and told the chef where to cut it off for you, so you could have one as big as you wanted!), loads of booze and the total bill came to less than £25. Beer was around 30p a bottle. I imagine that aspect has changed a lot, as the prices went up once it started having the World Cup, etc, but for a Yorkshireman it was like a dream! What wasn’t like a dream was if you ventured inland and saw the shanty towns that people lived in. The contrast between the haves and have nots was staggering.
This is true to be fair, the guy who drove us from the airport to our Cape Town hotel said pretty much the same thing, he was scathing about it.
A little bit earlier - mid 90s or so - I was going to be sent on a training course with work. I priced it up, and it was cheaper to fly out to South Africa, stay in a 5 star hotel, do the course, have a few days to recover before flying home than it was to do it in Manchester... No prizes for guessing where I ended up!
