We would never have been able to afford him. Peterborough don’t sell players cheaply. If Cole scores 2-3 more, particularly if he scores a couple just before the window opens, I’m sure we’d get offered a million by one of the lower Championsip teams. Our board isn’t one to take gambles on him firing us to promotion and earning us an extra 7-8 million, so anything in the region of a million and I’m sure we’d take it. Either way, the players hold the cards these days and at 29 I can’t see Cole being prepared to gamble on waiting until he’s out of contract to get a slightly better offer. A loss of form personally, a loss of form by teammates drying up his supply or a serious injury and it’s game over. So if a club is prepared to give him a life changing contract I’m sure he’d want to move, even if we are only offered 500k. Of the players whose contracts are running out in the summer, Cole is the only one likely to bring in a serious offer or who is likely to get tempted with tripling his wages. However, we have to remember Roberts’ contract runs out in the summer, so if Middlesbrough only get offered 250k from someone in January, it’s 250k that they otherwise won’t get, so we may end up having to enter a bidding war to keep him.
If we got anywhere near 1.5mill for Cole with his contract in this league, id give huge props to the club for that!
