    <font size="2">Former Manchester United and England striker Andy Cole has been questioned by police after an alleged attack on his wife. </font></p>

    Cole, who is currently on loan to Burnley from Sunderland, was arrested in the early hours of Monday morning at his home in Alderley Edge, Cheshire. </p>

    Cheshire police said they arrested a man aged 36 on suspicion of assault. </p>

    A spokesman said: &quot;He was interviewed and released on bail until April pending further inquiries.&quot; </p>

    Cole, who was born in Nottingham, married his long-term girlfriend Shirley Dewar at St Bartholomew's Church, in Wilmslow, Cheshire, in July 2002. </p>

    He scored nearly 200 goals in successful spells with Newcastle and Manchester United between 1995 and 2001 and has also played for Blackburn, Manchester City, Portsmouth and Birmingham.
