I see that the old site is closing down, and the spare cash has gone to the Cystinosis charity. TT wrote to me a few weeks ago and asked if I wanted to nominate a cancer charity to donate 50% of the funds to, with the balance to Cystinosis. The old site had previously supported a small cancer charity run by the hospital in Birmingham that I attend for treatment. That had elicited some negative responses from some on the old board "Why are we supporting a Birmingham charity?" etc, and that, coupled with the fact that there is a great deal of fund raising for cancer charities meant that I thought it more appropriate to suggest that 100% go to Cystinosis.

The main purpose of this post is to thank the old board for allowing me to indulge myself with the Dear Diary posts. At a time when I needed an outlet for my thoughts, it became much more than that. I received fantastic support that lifted my spirits and helped me through times that continue to be difficult. The messages of support that I received whenever I said I was going into hospital gave me strength and - I'm not ashamed to say this - brought me to tears sometimes. The first time that I went into hospital well over 100 posters (I counted them) left good luck messages. Many people contacted me through personal e-mails and messages on the board, saying that what I had written had helped them, their friends and relations, to come to terms with their condition, and given them a greater understanding and insight into the mind of a cancer sufferer. For once the fact that I had cancer had a positive side to it - I was able to help others, and that was a tremendous comfort as well as a boost to my morale. None of that would have been possible without the old BFC.NET site. So I owe it a lot. When TT visited me in Skipton in October 2003 he brought along a BFC shirt autographed by all the players, a bottle of malt, and the good wishes of the board and it's contributors. That gave me another big lift.

So the demise of the old board, and the reason for it,caused me immense sadness. I never felt able or willing to comment on TT's situation. I am old enough to know that few of us would like our private lives scrutinising too closely. Very few can hold their hands up and say they are blameless, with a flawless character and no personal weaknesses.

I rarely post now, but still log on and read most days. This board is different to the old one, and their is a different tone, much more confrontational, much more personal. I wish it all the best, whilst mourning the passing of the old board. Thank you for being there when I needed you.

    Nice

Terrific stuff, Steve. Slightly off-topic, but are you off to Bradford tomorrow? If you fancy dropping in at Cross Roads for a brew, I'll drive us to the game. I'll even pick you up there if you don't have your wheels. Planning to meet Matt & Vinny etc around 12-ish in that place we went last year. Cheers, mate.

Good to know you're still around and fighting

And all our good wishes are with you I'm sure Steve.

As an aside, it was the much maligned (by some) Tyketical Masterstroke who had the idea of getting you a drop of Malt with the spare cash from the old BFC.net, after some fundraising or such.

Good post - ive missed em

RIP the old board and well done to the community that it setup. although i do agree it is very confrontlon here now a days and alot of people seem to have bees in their bonnets about most subjects. i find posting a thing that will bring good comments, bad comments stupid comments and annoyng comments. the latter 3 i can hardly remember used to happen.

But keep posting, people like you are the people that keep it a good community on here and bring out the nice faces on people!!![IMG]

Good wishes to you Steve S

I know what you mean Steve - I am very sad that the old board closed and the reasons for it. I have made many friends as a result of finding the old BBS.net around the time we went into Administration. And but for the knowledge I now had people to meet up with I probably wouldnt have started going to the Away games again. I also know what you mean about the older ones realising we dont all lead blameless lives either.

This BBS is as you say more confrontational at the moment, I find that sad. I do hope that things will settle down and that the more personal attacks will over time disappear. Time will tell I guess.

Can I thank Chris Rhys, Matt and Radders for all the work they did over the years. Its much harder work running one of these things than I ever realised!

I will shed a tear when it finally disappears this weekend.

Echo what everyone else has said

Sad that the old board has met its demise, but lets hope this (or any other one) continues so that we can all get in contact with new and old contacts. The board can be especially handy if you don't live near Yorkshire, or indeed if you need the strength of others to help you through hard times.

    Good post Steve.

    On behalf of my family

Can I just say how much we've appreciated your help and advice . We , too , think it's sad that the old board closed down . However , I hope you continue to post on here Steve . I don't know whether you're aware of it or not , but you're probably held in higher esteem than any other poster .
