Remember it well! My first season. I remember every one of those lads as though it were yesterday. Sent from my SM-G900F using Tapatalk
I can list all their christian names except D Barber. Who was he? Did he sneak on in an early 1960s photo-bombing kind of style?
David Barber, half back or inside forward. Usually on the fringes of the first eleven iirc. Sent from my SM-G900F using Tapatalk
I once got Ken Oliver's autograph, on the bottom of a matchbox, as he walked up Summer Lane to visit his wife and newborn child in St Helen Hospital. Different world. Sent from my SM-G900F using Tapatalk
Yes I didn't bother looking it up, but I am sure you are right. A fringe player, perpetual reserve maybe. We didn't do "development squads" in those days
Duncan Sharp was my hero at that time. Proper centre aif hard as nails. He went down injured once and you could have heard a pin drop - the entire crowd was in shock! Sent from my SM-G900F using Tapatalk
I was just starting my long time affair with the Reds at the end of this season but a lot of these players stayed with us for some time. Normal in those days, but not any more. Eric Brookes, Bobby Wood, Billy Houghton. Proper stalwarts.
If W Houghton is Billy Houghton who went on to play for Ipswich when they had a good side in the late 60's , he was a mate of my dad's , I remember him fetching me a programme signed by the whole of their 1968 2nd division championship winning team .
Got to know Frank Beaumont well for a few years before he died, he coached the kids at Barugh JFC, as did his son Martin, who was a decent local league players. Lovely guy Frank, and a legend at Macclesfield. My Dad rated Eric Brookes highly I think, was he a left back? Sent from my SM-T710 using Tapatalk
Indeed a different world. A lifetime's worth of memories watching the Reds. Hopefully a few still to come!
Yes it is indeed Billy Houghton. IIRC he also played for Watford. Sent from my SM-T520 using Tapatalk
Yes left back wore no. 3. Local lad from Kexborough. This thread is brilliant, I'm staggered how much I can remember 55 years on! Sent from my SM-T520 using Tapatalk
Good therapy for early onset alzheimers. That bstrd Alzheimer can't wipe out those red memories. That's fer ferkin shooer!
David Barber. Half back who came into the first team for a few games and did very well. He was promptly transferred to PNE, I think. He used to get very nervous before a game and I remember the Chronic did a picture of him hiding behind the paper before a match once. Apparently his favourite way of calming his nerves. (That was in the days when there was summat worth reading in it, though.)
