why promise?
I was happy enough to let the current team have a go in this division. I feel a team thats starting to gel has as good a chance as any.
but box office players not on our wages and Gordon should have known before he promised......

    True HE didnt

but a statement was put on the official website of the company of which he is chairman.

Who at BFC took the decision to put the statement on the official Barnsley FC website? That person should have known better in my opinion and should be held accountable but as we all know, when things go wrong it is normally the person at the top who ultimately gets the blame.

    Oh for goodness sake.

Is this the same person who brings up THE BOX-OFFICE PROMISE every few weeks using a different user name, for a laugh? No-one PROMISED anything. Strewth.

    RE: sorry....................

Instead of being fed up with all the crap over the years, why not just enjoy the team we have now which is young and still learning ? This young side is doing us proud and only going to get better. True "box office" would have been nice but at the same time a big name coming in might think they are better then the team and spoil team morale etc. When going on about "box office" look at the pros AND cons and not just the pros.

something like "if a box office player was to become available, extra funds maybe found to secure their services".

I can't remember exactly what he said but was similar to the above. This being the case I find no issue with what he actually said being released to the press, or that anyone was misled regarding it.

To quote the official site; "Club will go for 'box office' players"

Here is the full story from the official Barnsley FC website.

CLUB WILL GO FOR 'BOX OFFICE' PLAYERS - CRYNE

BARNSLEY FC benefactor Patrick Cryne believes the Club will be looking to sign quality players this summer - and hinted that Newcastle United star Michael Chopra is on the Reds' shopping list.

In an exclusive interview with the Barnsley Chronicle, Patrick said: "If someone is 'box office', we're more likely to find the funds than if it is someone who won't excite the fans. Andy Ritchie is aware of that so we will be looking at key players.

"We are going to try to produce a football side that gives good entertainment and is a source of pride".

When asked about Chopra, Patrick added: "He is absolutely the kind of player I would like to see. The fans sent out a very clear message and Chopra knows he is very well liked at Barnsley".

Read more from Patrick Cryne in today's Barnsley Chronicle (Friday June 2, 2006).

In my opinion the miss representation of this story is down to one thing and one thing only and that is the headline. "CLUB WILL GO FOR 'BOX OFFICE' PLAYERS".

Headline's are important on news stories because they are the first thing that you read and plant a sead in your head that stays with you for the whole story. If it had read "CRYNE MAY MAKE FUNDS AVAILABLE FOR BOX OFFICE PLAYERS" then people's take on the whole story would have been different and nobody would be using the word 'promised'.

It is unfortunate that one person's (presumably) poor choice of wording could potentially cause such bad feeling towards Gordon Shepherd from some fans if we are to go down without signing any big name players when he more than likely had nothing to do with the story but at the end of the day he is Chairman and he knew the responsibilities when he took over the role. One of those responsibilities is to make sure that the various departments are running correctly and not doing things that may have a detrimental affect on the club's relationship with its supporters.

Well surely that's the fault of the person writing the headline and not Patrick Cryne ?

    That's what I just said

It was presumably Rob Knowles that wrote the article as whoever wrote it attached "©www.barnsleyfc.co.uk 2006 RNK" to the bottom.

Patrick Cryne cannot help it if others choose to misquote him and neither can Gordon Shepherd but somebody was to blame for the 'promised' comments that keep appearing and that somebody was the person who wrote the article.

christ, are you not capable of reading the whole article? Your vendetta against RK is getting a bit much.

Yes I am capable of reading the whole article. Thus why I noticed the bit at the bottom.

And also why I don't expect box office players. You may not have noticed but I wasn't the one who asked where they were, that was red_ders.

I offered a suggestion as to why people keep saying promised and I think that the suggestion is reasonable enough as it isn't exactly a secret that headlines are important.

If the bbc story said that it might happen, the chronicle said it might happen and the Barnsley official website states in its headline that it WILL happen then why do you think people keep saying promise? I can't seem to put my finger on it.
