That's one for the kids..... I do remember having this in when mi mam & dad were skint & couldn't even afford Mellow Birds
They sell it at the humble pie and mash shop in Whitby, I had a cup once for old times sake, yeeuk can't believe we used to drink it, good for coffee flavouring in cakes though apparently.
They still sell the syrup but as said it’s more as a flavouring for cakes etc now - and price wise you can get a cheap jar of instant coffee for about 70p (nasty but still probably nicer than a mug of Camp) but Camp Syrup is nearly £2 and wouldn’t make any more ‘coffee’! I might buy some to see if it’s still the same.
To think people use to drink that stuff regularly, including me on occasions when I went to see my grandparents, truly awful.
My grandma used to have Camp Coffee and I loved it. It will be forever associated with her in my mind. I used to get on the Thurnscoe bus after school at Highgate Juniors on fridays and stay at grandma's till saturday morning before going home (Bolton on Dearne). Neither us nor grandma had a phone so my mum had no idea where I was for 24 hours. Seems like a different world....
Did you know ..... The label on the bottle used to have the Indian man holding a tray of coffee for the seated man. All part of the Raj I imagine. At some time the tray was removed and I think the current label has him holding a cup too. This bbs has some far reaching influences !
