This just a cynical move to get more money out of loyal supporters and broadcasters. The current system works well, leave it well alone.
Extend the Prem to 24 teams, Make Relegation form L1 3 teams Promotion to L1 3 teams and possibly 3 team relegation from league. That's the only change. Too many games premier league teams? Too many games? Play one of your millions footballers that you signed at the age of 8 and are now 25 who have barely play a game. Tough titty.
I don’t think they can fit the games in. The calendars that cramped now that the sides in Europe wouldn’t have the space for 8 extra league games. It’s twice a week pretty much all season if you go deep in competitions like City & Liverpool tend to do
It's been driven by Ridsdale not the league or the broadcaster, so the motivation comes from trying to getting 2 additional places so Preston can sneak in, the broadcast deal is already in place until 2029 so the finance is locked in. Ridsdale says it will reduce the amount of dead rubber fixtures towards the end of the season. Apparently it's been well received, clubs are set to vote if it's approved by the EFL and Premier League it could start next season, L1 & L2 would follow suit once they've agreed the promotion and relegation situation with the National league, who are pushing for 3 promotion spots.
Midtable Championship side gets fluke promotion, but team finishing 3rd level on points with the 2nd place mis out and their so called advantage gives them a possible disadvantage too. Then they get slaughtered every week in prem.
I like the system as is. It keeps up the interest. Instead of just top 2/3. For most clubs it used to be the case of nowt to play for from Feb/March onwards. I'm not so sure if 8 takes it too far. Look at how we got to the play off final and promotion in 2016. The season was over more or less when it began. Bottom in December. Up there imo as the most surprising achievement ever by any club.
Struggling with that one mate, normally I'd agree but disagree on this occasion Currently 5 games New proposal 5 games TV money already fixed until 2029 Driven by one individual Agree to disagree
I do not think it fair that the team finishing 8th is promoted to the Premier League. Those finishing 1st & 2nd struggled to stay up. A team that can't finish in the top 6 are going to get beaten most weeks.
Gives more teams more to play for I guess, however I do think there has to be a line somewhere. If it goes too far, you'll end up with teams only ever aiming for 8th, or 10th, or 12th. Worse still, you'll end up with teams in the PL, who are nowhere near equipped for it.
Finishing in the current play off spots is already enough. No way should you have a chance at being promoted having finished 8th. I'd prefer to see the top 4 of each division promoted and the bottom 4 from each division relegated doing away with the play offs.
Basically what it does do, is dangle the carrot for more teams to throw more money at a chance for the golden ticket to the premier league and panders to alot of so called 'big teams' who might've had a crappy season by their expectations. It also opens up the chance for the January transfer window to become more active as there's probably a gap formed by January from the low end of the division to the top 6 - the top 8 could be a different story. What they might not have thought about is that if a side spends 6/7 seasons in a division - in 1 of those seasons they will have a good one and they could sneak in to the top third of the division. I'm not a fan of it , but lets be honest it should appeal to such as ourselves as it gives us a greater chance of upsetting the applecart!
It'll never happen. When the voting majority in the PL are all American owned they will vote for 16 teams no relegation same as NFL- and games to be played world wide
Fowls and blunts putting a counter plan in which sees the 23rd and 24th teams being included in the play offs instead of the 7th and 8th.
