Agree to a certain point . He is certainly no defensive midfielder but a number of times today when he was deeper than Thompson, Thompson was always telling him to get forward of him. Thompson seemed comfortable playing that defensive role and wanted Butterfield out of way a think!!
Seems to me he wants to be box to box player but lacks the drive when defending. That said his game today was his best in a reds shirt and he should have scored to round off a good performance.
