An elderly relative of mine (late 70's) lost his beloved dog last week. We searched high and low, rang all the vets & called all the local dog wardens to no avail. Bloke turns up on his door step today and tells him he's found his dog, but wants £300 for it. They arranged to meet an hour later where the money and dog were handed over.

What kind of sick people do that? The poor bloke has been worried sick. I'm so chuffing angry. Angry at them for stealing the dog and at him for going out on his own to meet them!!

    What a terrible story

How some people can descend to such depths of behaviour, exploiting the love between owners and their pets for financial gain, is beyond me.

Horrible b@stards. Hope nothing happens to the bloke who took the money.

That's awful, the poor man. I dread to think what would happen to the dog if they did this someone who couldn't pay.

If they do it to someone else let's hope they get the police involved

The same thing happened to my sister's ex Boyfriend his Staffy got nicked it was only about 16 weeks old at the time. Lucky for him someone spotted them hanging around the back garden where the dog was & contacted the police the same gang had pulled the stunt 3 times before so the police knew where to look

Sounds like it could be illegal

Either lost property is the owners when found by law. If I lost a gold watch and reported it missing and somebody found it there is no obligation to pay a reward
for returning it to me. Directly its found and made known, its my property. or

It could be classed as 'demanding money with menaces' had your relative refused to pay him, did he threaten not to give him the dog ?

If you find some lost property

you have to take "reasonable steps" to try and trace the rightful owner or you can be guilty of theft.

This dogknapping sounds like pure blackmail to me.

Surely the bloke could ring the bobbies

Thats bang out of order; there are some total w*nkers out there aren't the. Surely thats illegal, well obviously it is; cos it sounds to me he's stolen the dog in order to make a profit from an old fella. Some people have absolutly no shame do they.

It happened just over the border from us in a little village of Dorset. From what I can gather, the bloke that 'found' the dog is from one of the traveller camps in the area who are renowned for this type of thing. Our elderly relative didn't think to contact the police, but I believe the dog warden has now. I doubt anything can be done, but here's hoping.

My first reaction was anger at our relative for not contacting the police prior to collecting the dog. The dog warden was also furious about this. I guess he just wanted his dog back and it all over and done with.
