We signed Ronnie Glavin from Celtic. I reckon a few posters on the 1970s BBS would have heard of them.

The first game Ronnie played was away at Lincoln. I was there. The general consensus at the game was..."who's this sluggish, stocky bloke?".

You didn't say that though. You said when we signed him. Although terrible debuts would be a fun and endless debate.

I still don't get why RAC was in floods of tears just because everyone didn't thank congratulate him.

I don't get the debate. It's endless and pointless. There are many examples of experienced players signed who turned out decent, or who turned out crap. Same with inexperienced or lower league players.
What annoys me is certain people writing players off as a matter of routine because they're from lower levels of football.
For what it's worth I do think we could do with some experience right now and I'm pretty sure the owners would sanction that route short term to keep us up. Whether there's anyone of experience available who wants to sign on for a relegation scrap is another matter.

It does beg the question then, why are they selling him/letting him go out on loan?

I'm not saying he won't be any good but if have thought regular first team players from currently a lower mid-table French side, would have been out of our price range unless there's something fundamentally wrong with him.

Just looking at the amount of game time he gets, he does seem to feature in almost every game for Amiens, and it's split between starts and sub appearances.

Maybe our transfer structure has incremented ever so slightly, I mean I was surprised we managed to buy Pillinos outright last week as he'd only signed a 3 year deal for Cordoba in the summer.

I've no issue with signing lower league players - my post was unclear. In fact I prefer us to sign young, hungry lads who wish to prove themselves than old goats after a final payday.

How are we supposed to know? I and most others on here don't watch enough football away from Oakwell to comment. We've no idea how much money we have and how much we can afford for wages. Even if we did stumble across the name of a player, we don't know what wages he's on and how much he'd accept to join us. In short, we don't have the faintest foggiest clue. That's why we can't suggest anybody.

We need a player of Matty James' calibre on loan, not specifically his position but wouldn't you be more comfortable if we were signing someone like that rather than an unknown foreign player who may not even settle in until May. We need a short term fix to get us out of this mess, I'd be happy with the Manzala signing in the summer but not at the minute. Do you think that this type of quality is out of our range?

Matty James had been injured for well over a year so Leicester loaned him to us so we could get him the game time.

Bugger you've quoted me before I changed the predictive text from Mandela! You could answer the question though, of his calibre. Is this type of player really out of our price range on loan? I doubt it.

You have to remember we’re at the end of a long thread here that most won’t bother with so the reaction to Manzala, if indeed he signs, isn’t representative.

That said, I will be very surprised if it’s as tepid as it is in this thread. This is clearly not our usual type of signing. It’s a step up. Ligue 1 is a very good league. For me it’s the most exciting signing we’ve made in a few years. Not because I think he’ll 100% be a success, but because it’s a clear improvement in the type of player we can bring in.

We all have a good idea.

Maybe they’ll be a book released which goes into greater detail.

Who is writing this unknown French player off? And I say unknown in the sense of unknown name

I don’t think it’s unreasonable to suggest that players who need time to adjust before being able to perform to their best, which even then might be short of the standard required, might not be the best option for our situation.

I don’t think he paid anything for James he was virtually a free loan.

Not sure what you mean by this ‘type of player’ with James.

He’s a key player for Leicester when fit. we got him because of the injury.

So yeah Matty James is certainly out of reach on loan.

I think one or two have. I'd sign him if he's got potential but I definitely agree that, in the short term we could do with experience similar to that Matty James offered.

He became the finest player ever to wear a red shirt in my time. My point was that when we signed him he wasn't seen as a box office signing.
