It's not as stark as that sounds...it was actually Ukraine's proposal, the minerals are still in the ground largely due to lack of investment so it's not as though they're just shipping ready cast gold bars from the bank. The other aspect is that a very large proportion of the minerals are on land currently occupied by Russia, so there is now a purely transactive reason for Trump to want to see the land recovered.

And most of the valuable minerals are in territory currently occupied by Russia

It's a great shame that the government are so far up Trump's nethers. I'm sure that if there was a General Election this year they'd be rapidly distancing themselves from Trump.

My bet is Donald Trump will claim it’s the biggest deal in US history and that only he could have made it. My other bet is it won’t yield anything like whatever number he claims. As far as I understand, it’s rare earth that no one in the last 30 years has seen the benefit in mining. Not that any of this will matter to his weird cult rally.

It’s no different to Aramco in Saudi Arabia. The Yanks are exploiting the oil in a 50/50 deal with Saudi and in return the Saudis have military presence and protection by the Yanks. The Russia / Ukraine situation is not that different from Saudi and the rest of the Middle East that built up from the beginning of time until the 1st gulf war.

They aren't, they're now playing a diplomatic game for adults, rather than the megaphone virtue signalling for their followers that they did in opposition, that has proved embarrassing since. That doesn't mean they were wrong, but why say it when they may have to end up dealing with the orange fool. Very childish politics from people aspiring to high office.

I completely agree mate, just making the point that a looming General Election, given the UK population's revulsion at Trump, would mean it would be electorally sensible to distance themselves from Trump. The adult diplomatic stance taken at the moment seems to most people to be toadying to a dictator.

Lammy and starmer are the worst years of publicly slating trump then he gets in and there both up his arse publicly. Stick to your beliefs.

Funnily enough I watched a reel on starmer the other day promising in his manifesto council tax will be frozen he said he numerous times trying to get votes.. gets in everyone's went up some as much as 15% politicians for you.

You've been listening to and watching Huddlestone I assume (at no time does he mention which year) Or tin pot Badenoch.

    The facts
It appears that Ms Badenoch was referring to a promise made by Sir Keir Starmer in March 2023 when he was leader of the opposition.

In a speech in Swindon that month, Sir Keir said: “Labour would freeze council tax next year, using that windfall tax that hasn’t been collected. Yes you heard it right, not a penny more on your council tax, not a penny more than the bill you paid last year.”

Sir Keir was therefore talking about the following fiscal year, which started in April 2023 and ran until April 2024. That means that his promise to freeze council tax was never intended to cover the changes that are set to come into effect from the start of April 2025.

Sir Keir’s speech was accompanied by several social media posts, all of which made it clear that the promise did not apply further than a year ahead.

Looked into it and yes your probably right. He was asked if council tax would rise before the election but avoided the question.
