Just talking to my uncle, says he was at the first match Barnsley got their floodlights. Anyone able to tell me when it was.

I was a 10 year old at Doncaster Road school and remember them being erected.

Looking back on google, Prince of Risborough replied to a thread saying it was a Friendly against Bolton Wanderers 23/01/1962.

Yes, it was against Bolton. I seem to recall The Reds winning 2-0 (or, maybe, 2-1) with a certain Tom Finney wearing the number 9 shirt for Barnsley. I think he may even have scored one of the goals.....

I was at that game as well. It was a friendly to celebrate the opening of the new floodlights. Tom Finney guested and I'm sure there were a few others. Bolton had Nat Lofthouse playing. Not sure what the first league game under floodlights was

He was certain we'd played either Bolton or Preston, and remembered Tom Finney and Nat Lofthouse playing. But he was certain it was before 1962, based on where he was living. I've sent him the link to the previous discussion, so he can have a read for himself. Cheers

That is correct! Special friendly against “First Division Giants” as they were then - Bolton Wanderers. I wish I could remember the occasion but I was only 9 then.

Jimmy Hagan also guested for us. Sheffield United and England winger. The real coup was obviously getting the great Tom Finney to play for us. Maybe on a par with Messi turning out for us if we had such an occasion today

I used to love the V shaped floodlights we had before the Beresford ones. Christ knows how they chucked out enough light though.

I was there as a 9 year old. I was standing in the boys enclosure at the Kop end. Probably my first visit to Oakwell.

I went to this game also. Wasn't Tom Finney's goal a handball?

It was against Bolton Wanders and as suggested Tom Finney of PNE fame scored with a handball.

There was talk about European opposition and then a Scottish team.

    But it did not matter.

I was there with my dad.

Not sure of the date but early 1960's.

    Really exciting night.

I went to that game. I was 16 years old and it was a great feeling for us to actually have some floodlights. On a personal note, it meant no more 2-15 afternoon kick-offs for midweek games so no more risking a caning for skipping school.

I couldn't confirm that as I didn't see the replays. I do remember Barrie Thomas scoring with his hand against Doncaster Rovers.

One of the few games I can recall from my early years - I was 13 at the time. It was the first football match I had attended under lights, although the memory stops short of recalling any 'fine' detail about the match or the players.
