    THE GUARDIAN (December 14, 2005)

A thrilling encounter was settled in Barnsley's favour courtesy of Martin Devaney's brace of goals in extra time to secure his side a third-round tie at home to Walsall.

Devaney pounced in each half of extra time to break Bradford City's hearts and leave them realising they had only themselves to blame for not progressing: twice they held the lead in normal time only to be pegged back by stubborn opponents.

Paul Hayes scored a second-half double to force this thrilling Yorkshire derby beyond the regulation 90 minutes. The game came alive after the interval when Barnsley rallied from behind to take the lead with two goals in eight minutes from Hayes and then Paul Reid.

Bradford refused to buckle, however, and after Andy Cooke had gone close with two chances, the defender Mark Bower equalised on 66 minutes with a glancing header after David Wetherall had nodded Ben Muirhead's deep corner back into the danger zone. Wetherall then headed his side in front on 73 minutes before Hayes popped up with his second of the night to restore parity.

Cooke had earlier ended his goal drought with a close-range finish for the opening goal to put Bradford City within touching distance of a place in the third round for the first time since 2000. His scoring record this season has been on a par with Bradford's success in this competition in recent years. Poor. But he was in the right place at the right time on 35 minutes to guide Dean Windass's shot into the back of the net and register his first goal since October, a desperate run stretching eight matches.

It was just reward for the hosts' bright start, with Cooke's acrobatic overhead kick going just wide inside the opening two minutes and Marc Bridge-Wilkinson suffering a similar fate moments laterfrom a rasping drive from the edge of the penalty area.

The first clear-cut chance fell to Danny Cadamarteri on 18 minutes when he outwitted two Barnsley defenders inside the centre circle and found himself with a clear run on goal. He looked certain to score until Martin Devaney made several metres to get back and dispossess Cadamarteri at the crucial moment.

Aside from a spat between Windass and Jacob Burns, the early exchanges lacked the passion of a typical Yorkshire derby and failed to emulate the raw nature of the previous league game between the sides when each side had a player dismissed.

The temperature rose appreciably six minutes after the interval, however, when Barnsley restored parity through Hayes, who capitalised on a defensive mix-up between Wetherall and Bower to beat Howarth from close range.

    SPORTING LIFE (December 13, 2005)

Barnsley twice came from behind to earn a third-round FA Cup tie with Walsall after edging Bradford 5-3 after extra time in a thrilling second-round replay at Valley Parade.

Bradford went in front in the 34th minute through Andy Cooke after Dean Windass' goalbound volley had been diverted into his path.

Paul Hayes equalised five minutes after the break when Bradford failed to clear Martin Devaney's cross and the visitors went in front for the first time soon after when Paul Reid shot through a crowded goalmouth.

Bradford hit back with two second-half goals in six minutes from central defenders Mark Bower, who equalised in the 66th minute, and skipper David Wetherall, who put the home side 3-2 ahead five minutes later.

But Hayes sent the tie into extra time with a 78th-minute equaliser and two extra-time goals by winger Devaney - in the 96th and 108th minutes - ensured Barnsley's place in the third round.
