Would you pick one up? We had this conversation this morning when a young lass at work was telling us about a hitchhiker that she had picked up. She was totally naive to the danger she could have put herself in.

So, the question is, would you give a lift to a stranger?

It gets the hiker 500 yards closer to where they want to go...

    I have in my time...

....probably still would. I did hitch hike a few times as a student. Went to Paris and back in a weekend once. I had lunch on the Saturday and set off back.

I've hitchhiked a fair bit - my friends do it more than I do though. I gave up because it became a bit too much effort to get anywhere (and because I had to walk 25 miles in a day after getting stranded just north of Newcastle)

Would definitely pick someone up - to be honest I think it's stupid that there's so much scaremongering around the subject. In my experience it invariably comes from people who've never done it and never would.

My mum once gave a lift to someone who was hitching a ride. When he went to get out of the car he gave her a lecture on why she shouldnt have picked him up!

Gave a lift to a rather strange someone the other day

while on holiday in Cornwall. Asked me if we were going to St. Ives and we were.

When he got in, he started saying that the bailiffs had taken his campervan that morning, that he hadn't eaten for 10 hours, and that he was going to sleep in a Church doorway that eveningand that his wife had recently died. "But don't let me spoil your holiday", he added.

Hewas a scouser and therefore I wasn't exactly sure that I believed him ... :D

    Done both

Accepted & offered lifts .... but within an official "hitching system" at Uni. You waited at designated areas in Leamington to hitch a lift to campus for an agreed fee of 25p.
Was quite a good system & as far as I know there were no incidents - apart from a woman once running out of petrol & us having to walk home, and one car had seen better days - you could see the road thru the rust holes!

Having said all that I would never offer a lift or hitch ordinarily.

When I was working in London and coming home for the weekend once, it was the same day as Donnington rock festival and I picked up 2 stunning Spanish lasses who were hitching to Donnington....shame I didn't have a ticket!
