BARNSLEY FOOTBALL CLUB STATEMENT - BRIAN HOWARD (30/09/08) Posted on: Tue 30 Sep 2008 AS our fans will attest, it is not the normal policy of Barnsley FC to comment on transfers to and from the Club until complete and irrevocable agreement has been reached. Given the widespread reporting yesterday that the Club has agreed terms with Sheffield United for the transfer of Brian Howard, it is necessary to make a statement. As at 9.00am this morning, the terms offered in writing by Sheffield United for the transfer of Brian were not acceptable, most particularly in terms of proposed sell-on arrangements. Overnight, Barnsley FC has received a further acceptable offer for Brian from another club, and as is proper, the Club has reverted to his agents to obtain formally, their client's instructions in relation to this opportunity. We will make further statements as necessary.
Don't get too excited ... if this other club isn't able (or willing) to match what Sheff Utd have put on the table to Howard then he can reject them leaving us with a take it or leave it from Sheff Utd - this could backfire spectacularly. Don't forget in going to the Blunts he doesn't have to move his family or anything like that.
Im sure this other club have offered close to or around what Sheff Utd have - hence we are making it clear they need to change the terms of the deal or increase the price - if it comes to a take it or leave it thats down to Bri but if he turns it down i would say to him your playing for a contract with another club for the next 6 months - you have to earn it!
you misunderstand me ... I meant an offer to Howard, not to us, naturally what "Club B" have offered us is acceptable which is why we've referred their interests to Howards agents. Hypothetical, but lets say that Utd were offering him £10k a week and nothing changes, his family stays where they are etc, etc. Club B however might not match those terms. They may only be offering say £8k (all figures are total guesses) or they match the £10k but Brian turns them down because he doesn't want to move to another part of the Country. That then leaves us an unacceptable sell-on offer on the table from Sheff Utd. They think, ballaks to Barnsley - they've tried to make us look daft this morning. Here you Barnsley, no sell on clause at all. Our new offer is £500k take it or leave it. We're then worse off than we were before the so called 'bidding-war' ever started. That's why I say it could backfire spectacularly.
You do realise its 105 miles from Bristol to Southampton? When you get south of Birdwell it doesn't all merge into 1 place called The South.
but then he either plays out his contract which hes going to have to put a shift in for 6 months for a bigger club to come in and get him at the end of the season.
Good point ... I haven't a clue to be honest, just assumed that he did. If not then perhaps a slightly different slant on it all.
He has no family in Barnsley. The other club is Bristol C but he see's that as a side step in the football world rather than a forward one
Really? If they were willing to offer the same package I'd have thought they stood a better chance than Sheff Utd of going up.
You seem to know him and as you say his is the important view in this. To me Sheff Utd are a club that have underachieved an awful lot, their parachute money will run out and if they haven't made it back there'll be the usual fire sale. By contrast Bristol City are smaller in reputation but have a respected manager, came closer to promotion than Sheff Utd last season and in my view will this season also. You only have to listen Sheff Utd's fans to see what they think of their chances this year. Anyway, say thanks to Brian for the spectacular goals ... shame it had to end like this but there you go.
