actually I have a bacterial infection for which I am taking Amoxicillin, my Xmas was ruined, but that's not why I am posting. My PC has a virus and the only known cure is to boot up in safe mode apparently and run a scan from Microsoft website which means I need safe mode with networking. Howevever when I boot up in safe mode with networking, my wireless connection from the said PC is not recognised - ergo I can't connect to Microsoft, ergo I can't remove trojan. Any ideas how I connect to net from safe mode?

I know this is probably a stupid question but..........

......can't you wire up to the modem?

Oh and what's the virus called?

Nope not a stupid question ....

... but router is miles away (not literally, I'mnot that posh) from PC and I really want to avoid lugging PC about. As to the name of the virus, I forget. I was a little worse for wear last night when after a sporadic random reboot I decided to let Microsoft send a message for a change. They came back and said I had this virus and had to reboot in safe mode and go here to run a virus removal http://safety.live.com/site/en-US/default.htm. I rebooted without noting which virus it said I had. Perhaps I'll just wait for the next occurence. I have run spyware removal and spybot and they both come up clear.

More to the point Andy, have your run a virus check (AVG, Norton)? There are very few viruses that have to be killed in safe mode. Provided you can boot the PC into Windows, run your Virus Checker and let IT deal with it.

    I don't have norton but ....

AVG and Microsoft AntiSpyware are both running clear. I'm beginning to wonder if I have a virus at all. Perhaps my PC has Munchausen's ... or perhaps I have Munchausen's by proxy ..... ffs.

Or just too many microsoft beta test programs running

Dont forget that its a beta release of the sefety centre you are running.

If you want a second opinion try running housecall http://uk.trendmicro-europe.com/housecall/v6.5/ its a web based scan of your PC and it finds most things

I don't think you have a virus. These checkers can throw out false signals. It's called heuristics. If AVG etc.. run clear, I'd say you're OK.

    Beard.

Sounds very suspicious to me that mate. I'd treat it like a Gypo at the door, tell it you don't want to buy any lucky white heather and it can stick its curse up its arse.
