Labour needed to lose 3 councillors to lose control. Net loss of 1 (2 lost, 1 gained)

They have made it difficult for themselves as well by de-selecting labour stalwarts who have then run successfully in their old wards as independents.

True, but they still retained enough seats, often with huge majorities. Do people really thank "I'm voting Labour cos I've done that all my life"? Do they not see the fiascos, at least on a national level? I'm surprised.

We're voting on how well we are represented locally, not on national issues.

True enough I suppose, but in many constituencies these elections are used to send a message to central government... they have a larger say in what's possible at a local level anyway, as they provide the vast majority of funding for councils and set directives on how some of it is spent.

I think it's admirable if Barnsley folk are separating national and local issues, but do we have a habit of voting Labour whatever the level.

Glad they've not done as well as a lot had feared... can you imagine if they got in? (hidebehindsofa)

Interesting, where you getting your info mate. They will get a few seats this time around mainly due to protest votes.

My dad's at the count. He held the Wath ward for Labour. BNP have won Maltby by 18 votes.

To make matters worse, Ted Millward. a big ex-NUM figure in the area, stood as an independent and split the Labour vote, allowing the BNP to sneak in.

    So..

I wonder what would have happened if all council seats were up for grabs.

I think they would maybe have lost control..
